The 50th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival closed with an awards ceremony on Saturday night.US film Bob and the Trees, where the main character, logger and rap fan Bob Tarasuk, plays himself, took the main Crystal Globe award for best film. The Grand Prix for Best Documentary Film went to Czech filmmaker Helena Třeštíková for her latest long-term documentary Mallory. Czechs also took the awards for best actor and actress. Alena Mihulová was rewarded for her portrayal of a dedicated nurse in Slávek Horák’s debut Home Care and Kryštof Hádek was given the award for his role in the drama The Snake Brothers by Jan Prušinovský.

Cinemas in Prague and Brno will screen films presented at the 50th Karlovy Vary International Festival. The festival's annual Official Echoes get underway this Saturday in the Aero and Světozor cinemas in Prague and in la Scala cinema in Brno. People who missed the festival will have a chance to see 31 films, including five from the main competition, until July19. The festival in Karlovy Vary, which celebrates 50th anniversary this year, comes to a close on Saturday night.

The awards by non-statutory juries were announced at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival on Saturday. The award of international film critics FIPRESCI went to Romanian film Box by Florian by Florin Şerban. The Ecumenical Jury awarded Bob and the Trees by US director Diego Ongara. The jury's special mention went to Ukrainian film Song of Songs. The FEDEORA Jury Award went to Heavenly Nomadic by Mirlan Abdykalykov and The Wednesday Child by Lili Horváth. Visar Morina's Babai collected the Europa Cinemas Label Award.

World premiere of the digitally restored copy of the legendary Czech film by Karel Zeman, 'Vynález zkázy' ('Invention for Destruction'), was held at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival on Friday night. The 1958 loose adaptation of Jules Verne's novel 'Facing the Flag' remains one of the most succesfull films in the country's history. It evokes the original illustrations for Verne's works by combining live actors with various forms of animation. The digital restoration of the film is part of a joint project of the Karel Zeman Museum, The Czech Film Foundation and Czech Television.

The team behind the upcoming feature-film “Anthropoid”, which tells the story of the famous 1942 assassination of acting Reichsprotektor Reinhard Heydrich, assembled at the Karlovy Vary film festival to promote the project, set to begin filming this summer in the Czech Republic. The film will star Jamie Dornan and Cillian Murphy as the legendary Czech and Slovak assassins responsible for the highest profile killing of a Nazi official during the Second World War.

The 50th Karlovy Vary International Festival, which opened in the west Bohemian spa town last Friday, has screened over 200 movies and welcomed a number of international celebrities. Radio Prague’s Ian Willoughby has been at the festival from the outset and I asked him how things have gone so far:

Over 82,000 tickets have been sold so far at the 50th Karlovy Vary International Film festival which is underway in the West Bohemian spa town. According to the film festival’s press department, nearly 11,000 people accredited for the event and more than 200 screenings have already taken place. The audience poll is headed by Paolo Sorrentino’s Youth, followed by Czech film Domácí péče or Home Care by debuting screenwriter and director Slávek Horák. The festival runs until Saturday.

The 50th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival is offering viewers more than fifty screenings at eleven cinemas on Saturday. They selection includes the world premiere of Journey to Rome, a Czech-Polish coproduction, and the world premiere of the Kyrgyz movie Heavenly Nomadic. The highlight of the festival’s second day is the international premiere of the poker road movie Mississippi Grind, presented by actor Ben Mendelsohn with director Ryan Fleck. US actor, Richard Gere, who was presented with the Crystal Globe for Outstanding Artistic Contribution to World Cinema at the festival’s opening ceremony of Friday night will give a press conference and later attend a screening of Pretty Woman at the festival’s outdoor cinema.

The Czech Republic’s, and probably Central Europe’s, premier international film festival gets underway in the country’s biggest spa town, Karlovy Vary, on Friday. And this year’s festival promises to be something special as the big 50 is celebrated.

In this week’s Arts, our guest is young up-and-coming filmmaker Andy Fehu, whose feature debut Greedy Tiffany will be shown in a midnight screening at the 50th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. The film follows the story of a no-good lout who learns about lost treasure.
