The 50th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival kicks off on Friday night in the west Bohemian spa town. The festival which is screening over 220 movies, will open with the 2014 American drama Time out of Mind, starring Richard Gere who will present the film alongside director Oren Moverman and co-star Jena Malone. Richard Gere is to receive the highest honour of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, the Crystal Globe for Outstanding Artistic Contribution to World Cinema. Among this year’s other VIP guests are the American actor Harvey Keitel and Irish actor Jamie Dornan. The festival will end on July 11th with a gala award ceremony.

American actor Richard Gere has arrived in Karlovy Vary. Mr Gere will attend the opening ceremony of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival on Friday at the Thermal hotel, where he will receive a lifetime achievement award for his contribution to world cinematography. The 65-year-old Hollywood actor will present the opening film, Time Out of Mind, along with actress Jena Malone and director Oren Moverman. Mr Gere will also attend Saturday’s screening of the legendary romantic comedy Pretty Woman and Sunday’s screening of the film Franny.

Hundreds of films fans have been queuing up for tickets to the 50th Karlovy Vary International Film festival, which is due to kick off on Friday. The festival will open with a screening of Time Out of Mind, which will be personally presented by the films lead actor Richard Gere. Among other guests of the 50th Karlovy Vary International Film festival will be Harvey Keitel and Fifty Shades of Grey star Jamie Dornan, who will present the new co-production film Anthropoid which begins filming in Czech Republic in mid-July.

In just over a week’s time the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival will get underway in the picturesque West Bohemian spa town. Special guests will include Hollywood stars Richard Gere and Harvey Keitel, while as always cinephiles will seize the rare opportunity to catch scores of interesting new and classic movies on the big screen. This year’s Karlovy Vary is the 50th, so I asked artistic director Karel Och what festival organisers had done to make it extra special this time.

Respected American actor Richard Gere, 65, and fellow actor Harvey Keitel, 76, will be two of the main guests to attend the upcoming 50th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. The announcement was made by the festival’s director, Jiří Bartoška, on Monday. Mr Keitel attended the festival previously in 2004 where he received a lifetime achievement award for his contribution to world cinematography; Richard Gere will be given the honour this year. The 50th inception of the Czech Republic’s most prestigious film festival will open with a screening of Time Out of Mind, in which Gere stars with Jen Malone. In the past, Gere starred in such films as Days of Heaven, An Officer and a Gentleman, and Pretty Woman. The festival begins on July 3 and finishes on July 11.

The Czech films Kobry a užovky (The Snake Brothers) and Domácí péči (Home Care) will compete for the Crystal Globe for Best Film in the official competition at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in July, iDnes.cz reported on Tuesday. Kobry a užovky has already had cinema distribution but Domácí péči will receive its premiere at the festival, which is this year taking place for the 50th time. Helena Třeštíková’s latest work Mallory will compete in Karlovy Vary’s documentary competition.

The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival is set to unveil a new screening hall at this July’s edition, its fiftieth. The 300-plus capacity hall is located at the Hotel Ambassador in the spa town’s freshly renovated Národní dům (National House). KVIFF’s executive director Kryštof Mucha said the opening of the new venue meant the festival would no longer use a blow-up cinema beside Hotel Thermal, which he described as rather outmoded.

The respected film and stage actress Iva Janžurová is set to receive an award for contribution to Czech cinema at the 50th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, the organisers said on Tuesday. Other guests at the jubilee edition of the festival have not yet been announced, but Mel Gibson, who last year received Karlovy Vary’s Crystal Globe for outstanding artistic contribution to world cinema, will appear in this year’s trailer, following in the footsteps of Jude Law and other recipients of the award.

Georgian filmmaker George Ovashvili’s Corn Island won the main prize –the Crystal Globe Award - at the 49th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival on Saturday night. The psychological drama is the story of an old peasant who transmits the wisdom of life to his granddaughter and reflects on the importance of harmony between man and nature. The winning film was made in coproduction with Germany, France, the Czech Republic and Kazakhstan.

The audience's prize went to a Czech entry - Olga Sommerova's documentary film The Magic Voice of a Rebel, which tells the life story of singer and dissident Marta Kubišová.

The Best Actress award went to Ella Fanning for her performance in Low Down, a U.S. film directed by Jeff Preiss and Nahuel Perez Biscayart picked up the Best Actor award for his role in All Yours, a Belgian-Canadian movie directed by David Lambert.

The jury's special prize went to Hungarian film maker Goergy Palfi for Free Fall. The main prize in the East of the West category went to Ivan Tverdovsky’s Corrections Class, a Russian-German co-production.

The 49th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival is to end with a gala closing awards ceremony on Saturday evening. Two Czech films are in the running for the main prize: Andrea Sedláčková’s Fair Paly and Miroslav Krobot’s Nowhere in Moravia. The festival screened over 200 films including seven international premieres, two Czech premieres and, for the first time ever, an animated film. It will close with a screening of Damián Szifrón’s Wild Tales. For the first time ever the closing film and the closing gala ceremony of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival will be shown live in cinemas around the Czech Republic.
