The Czech military says it is not planning to take its Russian made transport planes out of operation in the wake of Thursday's plane crash which killed 42 Slovak soldiers returning from a KFOR mission in Kosovo. It is not yet clear what caused the Slovak military's Russian-made Antonov 24 veer off course and crash in a mountain area close to the border. A Czech military spokesman said that the Czech air force discarded its last Antonov 24 last year, and the remaining Antonov 26 planes were reliable and well-maintained.

An ultralite plane crashed in Prague's Letnany district on Friday, killing both passengers, a father and son. According to reports the plane crashed when landing within the perimeter of an aviation club in Letnany on the outskirts of the capital. The cause of the accident is not yet known. According to investigators at the scene the pilot likely made a mistake when trying to land. A helicopter and an ambulance car arrived immediately at the scene but both passengers were already dead. Two teams of firefighters have been trying to remove the bodies from the plane.

Four Czechs, one of them a young boy, were killed when their light aircraft crashed in the Swiss Alps on Tuesday night. Police in the Swiss canton of Valais said that all the occupants of the single engine plane were found dead in the wreckage of the Czech registered aircraft, shortly after it crashed near the Simplon mountain pass. The cause of the accident is being investigated.

Col. Jaroslav Sramek was signing autographs for airplane enthusiasts in Prague at the weekend as part of the city's aviation film festival. Col. Sramek is best known as the only Czech pilot to have engaged and shot down an American fighter plane during the Cold War.

Chip Erwin is an American man who runs a factory making light aircraft in Uherske Hradiste, south Moravia. He himself is a passionate pilot and not only does he take part in competitions, he also flies home to Prague every weekend. His father was a mechanical engineer who later helped build the atomic bomb. When he came into our offices, Chip Erwin told me how his father's work helped influence his own future career.
