Two Airbus planes bought by the Czech army are to be named after World War II heroes, the Defence Ministry has announced. The aircraft will be named after Josef Ocelka, who flew in Britain's RAF, and Karel Janousek, who fought in the resistance in the two world wars and set up a Czechoslovak unit in the RAF during the second. President Vaclav Klaus is set to take part in the official launch of the Airbus A 319 CJ planes at Prague's Kbely military airport next Friday.

A 14-year-old German boy died when two gliders collided near Liberec on Thursday. The boy was at the controls of one of the gliders, despite not having a license. An instructor, who was sitting beside him, suffered only minor injuries. It is believed the accident occurred when the one of the gliders attempted to perform acrobatic tricks.

Two Czech aircraft JAS 39-Gripen took off from the military airbase in Caslav, central Bohemia, on Thursday to assist a small passenger plane making a domestic flight. The pilot of the small plane sent out an emergency signal indicating the plane had been kidnapped. The two fighters accompanied the Cessna to the airport in Rakovnik, central Bohemia, the original destination of flight, and returned to the base. It later turned out that the emergency signal was sent out by mistake. It is the second case of Czech fighters assisting a civilian plane over the Czech Republic this year. In January, a Hungarian passenger plane flying from Germany to Poland was assisted by the Czech Air Force.

A Russian passenger who threatened to blow up an Aeroflot plane, forcing an emergency landing in Prague last December, has been released on a one million crown bail. He may now be extradited to Russia. Jevgenij Dogajev was arrested at Prague's Ruzyne Airport on December 28th, shortly after his flight bound from Moscow to Geneva made an emergency landing in the Czech capital. The man, who has admitted to being heavily inebriated at the time, demanded entry into the pilot's cabin and threatened to blow up the aircraft. He was quickly overpowered by fellow passengers. Mr Dogajev's lawyer says his client was so drunk during the incident he had no idea what he was saying.

Pilots from the air force base in Caslav helped a Hungarian civilian plane find its way to Poland after it lost contact with air controllers on Monday. The small two-engine Foker was flying from Dresden to Poland and found itself off course over the Frydlant region in north Bohemia. The pilots escorted the plane en route to Poland until it established contact with Polish air traffic controllers.

Czech authorities have charged a Russian national for endangering an aircraft's safety, which forced the Aeroflot flight from Moscow to Geneva to make an emergency landing on Thursday. The Russian Airbus A-320 landed safely at Prague's international airport, with emergency crews standing by. Of the 178 people on board, including crew, no one suffered injury. The Russian man, reportedly under the influence of alcohol, allegedly tried to force his way into the flight deck, before being overpowered by passengers and members of the crew. The man is now to be held in custody. If found guilty he could face between eight to fifteen years in prison.

A drunken passenger caused a Russian plane flying from Moscow to Geneva to make an emergency landing at Prague's Ruzyne Airport on Thursday morning. There were fears of a possible hijacking after the pilot reported a state of emergency on board. A spokesperson for Aeroflot has now confirmed that the panic on board was caused by a drunk who made threats and started a fight. The man is a thirty two year old Russian national who was traveling with eight other family members, among them three children. He allegedly threatened to blow up the plane and demanded that it change course for Cairo. He was quickly overpowered by some of the passengers and handed over to the police in Prague. The plane was carrying 168 passengers and everyone on board is reported to be safe and sound. The plane is expected to continue on its flight to Geneva later today.
