Czech tennis number one Jiri Novak has reached the third round of the French Open after an unexpectedly tough encounter with Spain's little-known Marc Lopez. Pavel Nedved, who was suspended for the final, has failed to become the first ever Czech to win the greatest competition in club football, the Champions League. It's official: Sparta are Czech league champions. Despite low interest in the Czech Cup, winners Teplice will be glad of a chance of UEFA Cup action and Czech ice hockey goalie Roman Cechmanek is on the move.

Sparta Prague were due to be presented with the football league title at the weekend, but a legal question means they can't celebrate just yet; the Prague club are not best pleased. In tennis the Czech pair of Novak and Stepanek reached the final of the World Team Cup, only to be beaten by Chile. At least one Czech is going to get his hands on ice hockey's Stanley Cup this season and world champion Martin Koukal has been named skiing's King of the White Tracks.

The Czech Republic have beaten favourites Spain at tennis's World Team Cup in Dusseldorf, and coach Jan Kukal is confident Jiri Novak and Radek Stepanek can do well in the competition. Football coach Frantisek Cipro has signed with the newly promoted Viktorie Pilzen while ice hockey bad boy Radek Duda is leaving champions Slavia Prague for Russia's Kazan.

In sports: Sparta have failed to clinch league title after the game was called off. The Czech Republic upset Australia at the tennis World Team Cup. Kenyan pair win the Prague International Marathon. And Patrick Elias added a goal and an assist for the New Jersey in NHL playoff action.

Only a few dozen Czech ice hockey fans came to Ruzyne airport on Sunday to greet the Czech national team returning from the Ice Hockey World Championship in Helsinki. After Canada beat the Czech Republic 8-4 in the semi-final on Friday, the Czechs faced their former federation partner Slovakia in Saturday's bronze-medal match.

The Czech Republic's ice hockey start have got off to a winning start at the World Championships in Finland. The country's women's tennis team meanwhile have fallen victim to the power of the Williams sisters in the Fed Cup. Sparta Prague have gone further ahead in an exciting end to the Czech football season, Baros gets a brace for Liverpool and Arsenal are keen to sign Ostrava wunderkind Papadopulos.

Czech ice hockey coach Slavomir Lener has bagged some big names from the NHL for his squad for the World Championships while the Czechs have finally broken their "Russian curse" at the tenth attempt. Tomas Repka has not been recalled to the Czech football squad ahead of a friendly against Turkey and Denisa Chladkova has pulled out of the Czech women's tennis team just days before a tough Fed Cup clash with the United States.
