A woman sighs, moans, and cries out with delight - this isn't the soundtrack from a late-night movie, but one of the works in a classical music concert. It's a composition from 1919 by one of the masters of the inter-war avant-garde in Czechoslovakia, Erwin Schulhoff, and it's called the Erotic Sonata, a solo for what the composer described as a "mother-trumpet" - in fact a single female voice, a work with a fascinating score of scribbles, lines and dots.

Pat Cox, President of the European Parliament, paid a flying visit to Prague on Monday. Mr Cox's trip to the Czech capital was certainly a timely one in that it has helped generate interest in next month's elections to the European Parliament, which have reportedly met with an apathetic response among the Czech populace. One recent survey suggests that as little as 47% of eligible Czech citizens will bother to turn out and vote in next month's poll.

In just over two weeks time Czechs will go to the polls to vote in their first ever elections to the European Parliament. Thirty one parties and political groupings are registered and fighting for voter support. From the big league players to virtual unknowns, all are telling Czechs that they alone can best serve their interests in the European Parliament.
