The legacy of the Soviet-led invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968 remains an open wound, as was seen on Tuesday in the Czech parliament. Tempers rose over a bill aimed at giving financial compensation to people who suffered during the tragic events as Warsaw Pact tanks rolled into the country. David Vaughan reports.

Prime Minister Vladimir Spidla's first press conference since the Czech Republic joined the European Union was decidedly free of the pomp and circumstance that marked the historic expansion of the bloc: It was back to the daily grind on Monday, with the fireworks, champagne and foreign dignitaries of the past weekend a pleasant memory. Brian Kenety reports.

After a week of some Czech players' complaining they weren't getting any opportunity to measure their skills against tougher opponents, fans saw a real corker of a game Monday night as the Czechs faced off against traditional rival Canada at the Ice Hockey World Championship. The two teams have done battle on countless occasions, but it was the Czechs who persevered on Monday with an exciting 6 -2 win. They made it look easy even when events around them almost got ugly. It was a weekend of celebration. Many people spent Saturday night out in the open, drinking champagne in the streets of Prague or savouring the feeling of walking through border check points, with nothing but an identity card. The media reported on the birth of the first Euro babies in the Czech Republic and endlessly quizzed Czechs about how they felt as European citizens. Throughout the weekend special concerts and events were held to mark the centenary on Saturday of the death of the great Czech composer Antonin Dvorak. Over the weekend all the major Czech orchestras played Dvorak's music in concert halls around the country.

The Czech Republic's EU membership is being celebrated across the country - thousands of people took to the streets of the Czech capital on Friday for a series of outdoor events, which culminated at midnight with a few words from the Prime Minister and a magnificent fireworks display. It hasn't all been happening in Prague this historic weekend: at the triangle where the Czech Republic, Poland and Germany meet, people are celebrating EU enlargement with all kinds of events, from concerts to bike rides. But people from the three different countries have been celebrating in different ways, as Ian Willoughby has been finding out.

Most Czechs are looking to the future in the European Union with hope. But what about those linked to the past? While the country celebrates its EU accession, the Czech communist party is holding a celebration of its own: the annual Labour Day gathering in Prague's Letna park. Brian Kenety was at the event and joins me now in the studio.

Aptly enough, the 1st May is not only E-day but also the day that we remember a great Czech European. Antonin Dvorak - probably the most famous Czech in history - died exactly a hundred years ago. Special concerts and other events are being held around the country to honour the centenary. Radio Prague's Pavla Horakova went to the event to mark the beginning of celebrations.

Apart from the official celebrations in Old Town Square, elsewhere in Prague, a "Euro Market" attracted thousands of visitors. Brian Kenety went along.
