On Monday another voice was added to the row over Prime Minister Stanislav Gross's private finances. The veteran of the Czech political scene with the reputation of one of Central Europe's elder statesmen, Vaclav Havel, added his voice to the debate. Interestingly, he was sympathetic towards the beleaguered prime minister.

After a bitter struggle for rights, lasting over a decade, one of Bohumil Hrabal's best loved novels 'I served the King of England' is to be turned into a film. The palaver surrounding the rights put the project on hold for more than ten years, and embroiled the famous Czech directors Karel Kachyna, Jan Sverak and Jan Hrebejk. Jiri Menzel, who won an Oscar for his dramatization of the Hrabal novel 'Closely Observed Trains', has finally been selected to direct the film. Rosie Johnston has more on the story:

They say that behind every great man is a great woman: much of the current row about the Czech Prime Minister has revolved around his wife's business dealings. Sarka Grossova is often portrayed in a negative light; as a former "cafeteria worker" who married well and shamelessly trades on her husband's name and political connections.

The heated row over the Czech Prime Minister's personal finances took a dramatic twist over the weekend. Just as it looked as though Mr Gross's Social Democrats had made peace with their smaller coalition partners, the Christian Democrat leadership emerged on Saturday morning with a shock demand: either Mr Gross should stand down as prime minister or dissolve the government altogether. "It's just like Sarajevo"- those were the words of Prime Minister Stanislav Gross on Tuesday, when he was told at a news conference in France that Miroslav Kalousek, the leader of the junior coalition partner, the Christian Democrats, had given him an ultimatum: he should either clarify aspects of his personal finances or resign. Seven years ago, the same party made a similar move when the then Prime Minister Vaclav Klaus was on a trip abroad in Sarajevo. On that occasion they actually managed to bring down the government.

The Police Museum in Prague is currently holding a rather unusual exhibition that is attracting record crowds. It looks at prostitution in Prague at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries and at how the police tackled the problem in those days. On display are photos, police files, posters and also a number of curiosities.

Thursday saw the launch of a new three way Czech dictionary; giving the English, German and French translations of thousand of Czech words. While the dictionary is far too big to be taken on holiday - its makers are hoping that it will enable citizens of the EU to discuss the issues that affect them, and keep up with what's happening in Brussels. A million Britons are set to visit the Czech Republic in the coming year, with well over half of them holidaying in Prague. One out every four Members of the European Parliament — and two-thirds of the Czech MEPs — last month voted against adopting the European Constitution, that rather lengthy and complex document designed to govern relations between the now 25 EU Member States. Most Czech MEPs said they rejected the European Constitution because of the proposed formulas by which countries are "weighted" — meaning how much voting power they will have in future.
