Welcome to another edition of SoundCzech, Radio Prague’s language course in which you can learn new phrases with the help of song lyrics. Today we will look at some popular Czech sayings revolving around food – with the help of a song by the group Kamelot called Dvě kůrky.

Welcome to this week’s SoundCzech, which this week sounds less Czech and more German. This time we are going to be looking at German words that are commonly used in Czech, and to introduce a popular example, I’ve chosen the song “Ksicht” by the well-known ska band Sto zvířat (“100 Animals”).

The song we’ll be listening to is called Pořekadla – or “sayings” and as the title rightly suggests, the song is packed with them! But before we listen out for the first one, let me tell you that the voice you’re about to hear belongs to the popular Czech folk singer Wabi Daněk.

Welcome to SoundCzech. Two decades ago, the current minister for human rights and minorities Michael Kocáb was a musician. In 1988 his band Výběr was allowed to release their self-titled album after being banned by the authorities for several years. Today we are going to play a song from that album, called “Snaživec” or “Eager Beaver”. Just a year before the fall of the communist regime, audiences understood its lyrics as a very fitting description of a communist official trying to jump on the perestroika bandwagon.

Hello and welcome to today's SoundCzech, which has a slight culinary flavour to it. This week, we'll be listening to a song by Karel Kryl, one of the most respected Czech folk singers ever to have lived. The song comes from Kryl's first album, 'Bratříčku, zavírej vrátka', released in 1969 – it's called 'Salome', and all about King Herod's famed seductress. The phrase to listen out for is 'cukr i sůl':

Hello and welcome to another edition of SoundCzech, and a new set of Czech idioms imparted through song. Today’s phrases are none too polite, but could come in handy if you find yourself being pestered on a trip to the Czech Republic. Here’s hoping that you never have to use them but, still, they could be good to know. The source of today’s choice phrases is a song by Czech blues singer Ivan Hlas called ‘Na kolena’ (in English ‘On your knees’). And the phrase to listen out for comes in the very first line – ‘táhněte do háje’:
