On the anniversary of her birth 70 year ago last Friday, many Czechs remembered Olga Havlova, the first wife of the former Czech president Vaclav Havel. She was a charismatic person who was involved in intellectual dissident actions during the time of communism. Later on, Olga Havlova was heavily involved in humanitarian work with the physically challenged, the sick, the old people and orphans, and was a moral symbol in Czech society.

Rob Cameron's guest on this week's One on One is Tomas Sedlacek, a former economic adviser to President Vaclav Havel. Tomas was heavily involved in the recent EU referendum campaign, and is a committed fan of European integration. He says it's high time Czechs started referring to Europeans as "us" rather than "them", and to stop being afraid of a closer, more united Europe.

Former Czech president Vaclav Havel has been honoured in Berlin. On Wednesday he was awarded a prize by the German National Foundation for 2003, for his services in helping to improve German-Czech relations, European integration, and conditions on human rights. The prize given to Mr Havel is worth 100,000 euros. In his acceptance speech the 66-year-old former president said his goal had always been to steer a steady course of reconciliation between the West and the East while defending his nation's interests. Among those in attendance at the special ceremony on Wednesday was German President Johannes Rau. The German National Foundation which awarded Mr Havel the prize, was first set-up by former West German chancellor Helmut Schmidt in 1993.

Most papers lead today with news that some of the country's doctors are planning strike action this Thursday, while other dailies, like LIDOVE NOVINY, trumpet former President Vaclav Havel's return to politics as a goodwill ambassador. And there's also coverage of the Roma families in Slany who are literally living on the street after being evicted for not paying rent.

Judging by the responses to our competition, in which we asked who you considered the most interesting Czech of all time, the former president, Vaclav Havel, remains for many the strongest symbol of the Czech Republic. Now the Foreign Ministry is planning to make use of Vaclav Havel's good reputation abroad by making him a special ambassador.

Just two days to go until Czechs vote on whether to join the European Union, and the government's "Yes" campaign is in its final stages. But there are a number of other groups who've launched their own campaigns - either for or against joining the EU. One of the most prominent pro-EU organisations held a concert in the centre of Prague on Tuesday, to rally support for EU membership. Rob Cameron was there.

The former President Vaclav Havel is to be awarded the country's highest state distinctions : the Order of the White Lion and the Order of Tomas Garrigue Masaryk. The proposal for the former Czech president to receive these distinctions was approved by both houses of Parliament. It is not yet clear when the award giving ceremony will take place. Vaclav Havel spent thirteen years in office, the first three of which he served as president of Czechoslovakia.

Next week, from the 25th to the 29th of May, the sixth annual "Nonstop Reading" literary marathon will take place all over the world. Organised by the group Jazz Section-Artforum and the Czech Centres, this year's event is dedicated to former Czech president Vaclav Havel. The readings will begin in Prague, and will continue in Czech Centres all over the world and at the United Nations building in New York. On Thursday a Forum 2000 Foundation event was held in Prague's historic Municipal House on the topic "Quo vadis Europa?" - Latin for "Where are you going, Europe?" As you can gather from the title, the participants - who included former Czech president Vaclav Havel and intellectuals from all over the Continent - were there to discuss the future of Europe.

An assistant to Mr Havel said on Thursday that the former president had opened his new office in Prague's Vorsilska street. Mr Havel's office - where he will concentrate on reviving his writing career - is seated on the ground floor of a house belonging to Karel Schwarzenberg, his former chancellor. Mr Havel will have to finance the running of the office by himself until parliament passes a bill defining state pensions for ex- presidents.
