The news that former president Vaclav Havel has failed to win this year's Nobel Peace Prize came too late for Friday's papers of course - although several commentators do ponder over Mr Havel's presidential career and falling popularity at home. Also making headlines today - the current president, Vaclav Klaus, invited by Ombudsman Otakar Motejl to explain his recent scathing attack on the institution.

Former President Vaclav Havel is being tipped as one of the favourites to win this year's Nobel Peace Prize. Mr Havel, nominated for the eighth time, is among three leading candidates for the prize along with Pope John Paul II and the Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Most observers believe the ailing Pope will win; however some believe the pontiff's views on abortion and the use of condoms against AIDS make him too controversial. There are a record 165 nominees this year: the winner will be announced at 9:00 GMT on Friday.

There is one name for success in all of today's papers and that name is Arnold: Czech headlines read "Shwarzenegger on top in California", "Arnold wins", and "Terminator turns governor" after the 56-year-old actor successfully swept the governor's race in the sunny U.S. state. Today's papers make rather depressing reading - with little else happening, the grim road death statistics get front page coverage in Mlada Fronta Dnes. Lidove Noviny meanwhile leads with news that the investigation into the "robbery of the century" has collapsed through lack of forensic evidence, while Pravo claims that the Russian mafia is slowly but surely infiltrating the Czech authorities.

The former Czech president Vaclav Havel has been awarded the Canada Order, the supreme Canadian distinction, as the only foreigner among 109 winners this year, Canada's Governor General Adrienne Clarkson says on her website. The information was confirmed for the CTK news agency by Mr Havel's office and the Canadian Embassy in Prague. Ms Clarkson, who is Canada's de facto Head of State representing the British Queen Elizabeth II, plans to hand over the decorations late this year.

Former Czech president Vaclav Havel has travelled to the United States to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom from U.S. President George W. Bush. Mr Havel is the first Czech ever to receive the medal, which is the highest civilian award in the United States, and recognizes exceptional meritorious service.

Tuesday's newspapers don't agree on the most important story of the day in the Czech Republic, and lead with everything from tourists left high and dry by bankrupt travel agencies to a plan to attract workers from such countries as Bulgaria and Kazakhstan.
