The two families want CZK 12 million between them from the hospital in the Moravian town of Třebíč. The two couples had raised the other’s baby girl for the best part of a year before the mix-up was discovered, making world headlines. One of the couples, Jan and Jaroslava Čermák, had another baby girl last week.

The deputy mayor of the south Moravian town of Trebic was taken to hospital on Monday after being attacked at the local town hall by a citizen. Milos Masek sustained injuries to his head, wrist and chest in the attack, which is believed to have been carried out by a man who was angry about the poor soundproofing in his municipality-owned apartment building. Mr Masek said he had shown the man the door when he began speaking offensively, whereupon the man jumped on his back and began hitting him.

The parents of two newborn baby girls who were accidentally swapped at birth have received 100,000 CZK (5,000 USD) each from Vysocina Regional Council. District Officer Milos Vystrcil, who handed over the amount, said the sum was purely to cover expenses caused by the baby mix-up. He added that the parents and the hospital at fault would have to negotiate a figure for emotional damages at a later date. One of the parents, Libor Broza, responded to the donation by saying that it was hard to tell if it did in fact cover all the costs incurred, but at least it was something. The two families affected by the baby-swap are thought to want 1 million CZK from the Trebic hospital involved for each month that they have lived with their non-biological offspring.

In related news, Trebic police have suspended their investigations into hospital personnel implicated in the baby-swap. According to a spokesperson, there is little evidence that the mix-up was deliberate and thus a criminal offence. On Wednesday, two of the hospital employees who were sacked following the incident were reinstated in their positions.

A doctor and nurse dismissed from a hospital in Trebic after a high-profile baby mix-up have been reinstated. The head of the hospital's children's unit, Jan Kozak, and the unit's senior nurse, Jitka Pospisilova, were fired in October after it emerged that two babies were accidentally swapped at birth almost a year ago. However, both have now been offered their positions back by the hospital, and have accepted, Dr Kozak told reporters.

This Tuesday sees the opening of the 11th Jihlava film festival. The festival in the small town where Bohemia meets Moravia is one of the biggest of its kind in central and eastern Europe. Three nurses who were on duty when babies Nicole and Veronica were accidentally swapped are to be questioned by police, reported TV Prima on Saturday. One of the nurses has been suspended from duty following the disclosure of the mix-up. According to Prima, the three nurses, who have not been named, are wanted for questioning in connection with charges of gross professional misconduct. The hospital has declined to comment.

Photos taken by one of the parents involved show that his child was not allocated a number, written directly onto the skin to avoid confusion, as is normally the case. These photos are being handed over to the police as evidence. The parents of Nicole and Veronica met face-to-face this week, to discuss their next move. It was agreed that the girls will be handed over to their biological parents before their first birthday on the 9th of December.
