The 46th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival will come to an end on Saturday night, when the winner of this year’s main competition is announced at the closing ceremony. In addition, the American actor John Turturro will be given the President’s Award. This year’s closing movies is Woody Allen’s comedy Midnight in Paris. In the festival’s non-official categories, the winners were already announced Saturday afternoon. The Slovak film Cigán, by director Martin Šulík, won the festival’s Best European film award, as well as the international film federation‘s Don Quijote award.

For the 46th time, the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival kicked off on July 1st. As every year, celebrities and hordes of young film enthusiasts alike flocked to the west Bohemian spa town. Among the famous visitors this year are the legendary British actress Judi Dench and American actor John Turturro. Sarah Borufka was at the festival and has this report.

American actor John Malkovich has arrived at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, this time not as a film star but in the role of fashion designer, showcasing his latest menswear collection called Technobohemian. Mr Malkovich has been a frequent visitor to the Czech Republic, having been at the festival last year to receive the Crystal Globe for his contribution to world cinema, and appearing in this year’s Prague Spring music festival. On that occasion, an unknown thief stole several thousand crowns worth of personal items from his hotel room in Prague. Thursday’s invitation-only show will feature Czech actors modelling the designs.

In its second half, the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival will feature the Slovak film Cikán, Gypsy, by Martin Šulík, as well as over fifty other films. Mr. Šulík will present his film at the festival on Tuesday, calling it his most personal work yet. The American film and theater actor Martin Donovan also appeared at the festival on Tuesday, together with director Hale Hartley, with whom he has collaborated on many occasions. In its 46th year, the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival features over 200 films, many of them by first-time directors.

Serbian composer Goran Bregović has received the Festival President’s Award at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. Bregović made his name primarily as the composer for the films of Emir Kusturica. The same prize will be given later this week to American actor and director John Turturro, introduce the world premiere of his latest directorial film, Somewhere Tonight.

Festival organisers say they have so far distributed 7,437 festival passes to visitors and 1,300 to filmmakers, industry representatives and journalists. The festival wraps up on Saturday, July 9.

The prestigious Karlovy Vary International Film Festival kicks off on Friday. In its 46th year, the festival will once again draw countless celebrities and visitors to the famous spa town in western Bohemia. Among this year’s respected guests are the British actress Judi Dench, who will be awarded the festival’s crystal globe, as well as American actor John Turtorro. President Klaus is expected to attend the opening ceremony on Friday. Some 200 films, many of them by first-time directors, will be shown at this year’s festival, which runs until July 9.

Next month’s Karlovy Vary International Film Festival will be hosting two special American guests, actors John Malkovich and John Turturro. For Mr Malkovich it will be his second trip to the Czech Republic this summer, having recently performed in the Prague Spring music festival. He will also be presenting his line of men’s clothing, called Technobohemian, which will be modelled by leading Czech actors. John Turturro is set to receive a special prize awarded by the festival president and will introduce the world premiere of his latest directorial film, Somewhere Tonight.

When the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival gets underway in a couple of weeks, it will offer viewers hundreds of movies across three competition categories, retrospectives, and a host of other sections. The man ultimately responsible for the selection of all of those films is Karel Och, who, at only 37 years of age, will this year serve as Karlovy Vary’s artistic director for the first time.

The 46th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival will feature a number of films that were successful at festivals abroad in its non-competitive Horizons section. Among the movies selected is the Iranian film Nader And Simin, A Separation, which won the Golden Bear at this year’s Berlinale, one of the most prestigious film festivals world-wide. Other picks include the Italian film The Solitude of Prime Numbers, a nominee for the Golden Lion at the 67th Venice International Film Festival. German director Wim Wender’s 3D film Pina will also be shown outside of the competition at this year’s festival.
