US actress Susan Sarandon on Saturday arrived at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival where she is set to receive the festival’s Crystal Globe award for her contribution to world cinema. On Friday, Ms Sarandon will attend the screening of the movie Jeff Who Lives at Home in which she played one of the main characters. Susan Sarandon is the second international film star, after the English actress Helen Mirren, to attend the 47th edition of the festival.

The 47th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival kicked off in the west Bohemian spa town on Friday. At the opening ceremony, the British actress Helen Mirren was honoured for her contribution to world cinema. The festival, which this year again features a Czech film in the main competition, will conclude next Sunday with the handing out of the Crystal Globe awards. The 47th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival kicks off on Friday evening with a gala ceremony at the spa town's Hotel Thermal. At the ceremony, British actress Helen Mirren, the star of such films as The Queen or the British TV crime series Prime Suspect, will be honoured with a lifetime achievement award. Mrs Mirren’s latest film, The Door, directed by Hungarian director Istvan Szabo (Mephisto, Oberst Redl), will be screened at the festival on July 1. Over the course of nine days some 200 feature films will be screened, 22 of which will be world premieres.

Three Czech films will compete at this year’s Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, the organizers said. The movie Polski Film, or Polish Film, by Marek Najbrt will premiere at the festival, and will be among 12 films competing for the festival’s main prize, the Crystal Globe. The event will also feature the documentaries Two Nil by Pavel Abrahám and Tomáš Bojar and Private Universe by Helena Třeštíková. On Saturday evening, the 46th edition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival wrapped up and this year’s winners were announced – among them the Israeli movie Restoration, directed by Joseph Madmony. The Israeli movie Restoration, directed by Joseph Madmony, has taken the best picture prize at the 46th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. France’s Pascal Rabate was awarded the best director Crystal Globe for Holidays by the Sea during Saturday evening’s closing ceremony, while Punk’s Not Dead by the Macedonian director Vladimir Blazevski took the prize in KVIFF’s flagship East of the West section. Guests at the festival, which was first held in the West Bohemian spa town in 1946, included actors Judi Dench, John Turturro and John Malkovich.
