For fifteen years running now, the sleepy little central Bohemian town of Pelhrimov has been home to a summer festival of controlled record-breaking madness. Here, one minute you may see a teenage ballerina attempt to stand on her tippy toes - or bouree, as it's known in the dance world - longer than Balanchine ever dreamt possible; on the other side of the town square, perhaps, is a man preparing to quaff down 100 raw eggs in ten minutes flat. There to record it all for posterity - and perhaps for entry into the elite club of Czech record holders

Sixty-nine Czech MPs have this week signed a letter asking President Vaclav Klaus to give the pop singer Karel Gott an important state honour - the Order of Merit. Karel Gott, who turns 66 this Thursday, has sold many millions of albums during a career spanning three decades. Dubbed the "Sinatra of the Eastern Bloc", Gott is also very well known in countries like Poland, Russia and Germany, where he is a living legend.

The Czech awards ceremony Cesky slavik - or the Czech Nightingale - held in Prague on Saturday has seen a repeat of winners from 2003: Lucie Bila clinched the title of best female singer while the best musical group award went to Czech heavy metal band Kabat. Czech singer Karel Gott won for a notable 30th time in his extensive career, while young star Aneta Langerova, the winner of the Czech Republic's first ever Pop Idol, was voted best newcomer. Cesky slavik winners are chosen through a public poll: this year some 94,000 Czechs took part.

Besides featuring Czech stars the awards evening also saw performances by Norwegian singer Kurt Nilsen and Ukrainian star Ruslana.

No other Czech singer has dominated so solidly and for so long as Czech nightingale Karel Gott. At 65, Mr Gott remains enormously popular both in the Czech Republic and abroad, notably in Germany and Russia. Now Karel Gott has released a new album - called "Muj strazny andel" - "My Guardian Angel", which even the singer himself is calling his best so far.

Karel Gott's family, friends, and fans came together to wish him a happy belated birthday at a gala night in New York's Astoria World Manor on Saturday. The popular Czech singer, who celebrated his 65th birthday on July 14th, was accompanied by his two daughters and his partner Ivana Machackova. Among his birthday presents were a Happy Birthday song from popular singer Lucie Bila, a globe to help him keep track of where he is, and a birthday cake with a portrait of him in chocolate.
