The historic Czech Radio building, part of the broader Czech Radio complex found on Prague's Vinohradska and Rimska streets, has officially closed its doors for renovation. A special ceremony was held at the building shortly after 11 am on Friday. It was headed by the director of Czech Radio Vaclav Kasik and attended by several hundred on-lookers. Czech Radio's Vinohradska address witnessed some of the most important events in 20th century Czech history, including fighting at the end of World War II and resistance to invading Warsaw Pact troops in 1968. Renovation work at the radio building is expected to cost 500 million crowns and should be completed in two years' time.

The Czech Radio building has stood on Vinohradska Street for the last 75 years, and witnessed the rise and fall of the First Republic, the Nazi occupation, and then communism. The building itself has featured heavily in recent Czech history, with vicious battles being fought in its vicinity at the end of World War II, and Russian tanks and civilians clashing there again in 1968. If you listen to news programmes on national broadcaster Cesky Rozhlas (Czech Radio) you will frequently hear pop songs between the news bulletins, sports reports and so on. The format of one-hour, two-hour or longer news programmes, common in many English speaking countries, simply doesn't have an equivalent on prime-time national radio here in the Czech Republic. But that is about to change, with the launch on Friday of a programme called Radioforum, on Czech Radio's main station Radiozurnal.

Hundreds of members of the public visited Czech Radio on Saturday during the station's Open Day. Those attending the event had a chance to get a behind-the-scenes look at activities in Czech Radio and were given a tour of the historical radio building, which was a focal point for Czech resistance to foreign occupiers during the Prague uprising against the Nazis in 1945 and the Russian occupation of 1968. Staff of Radio Prague were also on hand to introduce visitors to Czech Radio's foreign service.

The regional stations of Czech Radio will begin broadcasting around the clock on Monday. Between 9 pm and 5 am the stations, with the exception of Prague's Regina, will have common broadcasting, with news bulletins during those hours concentrating on news from the regions.

Public broadcaster Czech Radio - home to numerous stations including Radiozurnal (Radiojournal) and Radio Prague the international service - has been rated Most Trusted Brand for 2007 in the "radio station" category in an annual survey conducted by Reader's Digest. Overall, almost 45 000 respondents took part in the survey. Participants taking part were chosen across a wide demographic. Czech Radio has now won in its category for the second time. It also came first last year.

Concertino Praga - Czech Radio's prestigious international competition for young musicians - has just announced the winners of this year's contest. Ever since this special event for up and coming musicians was established 41 years ago, it has become a conveyer belt for young talent in the world of classical music.

Former culture minister Viteslav Jandak has suggested merging the country's public radio and public television networks. Mr. Jandak, who is now an opposition deputy for the Social Democratic Party, said a merger of Czech Radio and Czech Television would enable significant cost cutting measures without reducing quality. The newly appointed culture minister Vaclav Jehlicka said he was not against the idea in principle, but noted that both Czech Radio and Czech Television were known to oppose it.
