Czech microbreweries say they receive unfair treatment at the hands of the customs and tax authorities and are overburdened with red tape. Now the beer makers are coming together to lobby the minister of finance for change, Hospodářské noviny reported on Wednesday.

Large breweries will mainly invest this year into export and canned beer, the daily Hospodářské noviny reported on Tuesday. Consumption of canned beer saw a sharp increase last year and the Czech Beer and Malt Association says this trend to continue.

The state-owned brewery Budějovický Budvar will invest 600 million crowns into production and development, news site iDnes reports, citing spokesman Petr Samec. According to the daily, new investment will go towards a new logistics centre and a new production line for its bottled beer. The spokesman told the daily, that the brewery was almost at full production capacity currently. Last year, the firm invested 700 million crowns and by 2020 the sum will be two billion crowns.

In recent years, Czech two way trade with the United Kingdom has advanced by leaps and bound. The country was already the fourth biggest Czech trade partner two years ago in 2015, following first placed Germany, Slovakia, and just trailing Poland in third place. But the current trading environment for Czechs in Britain is a tough one.

The leading Czech brewery Plzeňský Prazdroj is investing over CZK 280 million in production facilities for its world-famous lager Pilsner Urquell.

The west Bohemian city of Plzen celebrated 175 years since the birth of its famous Pilsner brew at the weekend.

On October 5, 1842 beer master Josef Groll made the first Pilsner beer, the world’s first-ever pilsner type blond lager, which inspired much of the beer produced in the world today, many of which are named Pils, Pilsner and Pilsener. He used hops from Žatec, soft water and his own malt. The recipe has not changed over the years.

Open air celebrations with Pilsner beer, good food and music took place on the main square on Saturday.

Czech beer has an international worldwide reputation but there are worries that on the home market at least it could be losing its appeal, especially in local pubs and among its most fervent fans. That’s one of the reasons for nationwide action being staged by brewers, pubs, and restaurants.

An annual event aimed at promoting the country’s brewing traditions has begun in pubs and restaurants around the Czech Republic. The Days of Czech Beer campaign, which runs until Sunday, offers drinkers the opportunity to sample beers from dozens of breweries, including one-off ones created for the event.

It also aims to support drinking draft beers in pubs and so prevent the demise of traditional Czech hostelries, an organiser said.

Czech brewery Budějovický Budvar is preparing a special batch of its beer for Pope Francis, which the head of the Roman Catholic Church will receive as a gift during a visit by a Czech delegation during the period of Advent this year. The delegation is scheduled to meet with the Pontiff on December 13. The special brew, which will fill 122 bottles, will be blessed in September and gifted to the Pope by Czech Bishop Vlastimil Krocil during the December audience.
