Two beer brands both lay claim to the name Budweiser. For decades, an American company, Anheuser-Busch, has been locked in fierce legal battles with a Czech company, Budvar, over who makes the real Budweiser beer. On Monday the two breweries announced a surprise agreement.

Beer production in the Czech Republic has grown by four percent this year and is expected to reach 19.8 million hectolitres at the end of the year, the head of the Czech Brewers' Association, Jan Vesely, said. Exports are expected to reach 3.5 million hectolitres compared to 3.1 million last year. The annual per capita consumption of beer in the Czech Republic remains at 160 litres. According to estimates, foreign tourists consume around 12 percent of the beer sold on the Czech market.

The Czech Republic has blocked an EU Commission proposal that would have seen a 4.5 percent hike on taxes on alcohol including beer. The Czech Republic has blocked the EU's plans to raise the minimum level of taxes on beer, finance minister Vlastimil Tlusty told reporters on Tuesday. With the minimum duty on most wines zero percent, a tax hike on beer would raise competition levels between brewers and winemakers, he said, adding that the changes are unacceptable in a country where beer is a national product. Last month the European Commission proposed a 31 percent increase in the minimum duty on beer and spirits.

Czech Foreign Minister Alexandr Vondra received a special "ambassador" on Thursday - a barrel of beer. The barrel, delivered by a horse-drawn carriage from the country's brewing capital, Pilsen, was given the red carpet treatment at the foreign ministry. Signed by Czech President, Vaclav Klaus, sporting personalities and citizens from the West Czech city, the "ambassador at large" will be dispatched on a special mission to Brussels next Tuesday to help the Czech Republic fight an EU proposal to increase excise taxes on beer.
