The Danish brewer Carlsberg has bought a majority stake in the Žatec brewery in the Czech Republic as it taps into a growing market for Czech premium beer. According to the ctk news agency Carlsberg acquired a 51 percent stake in the Žatec brewery for an undisclosed sum. The brewery has a capacity of 200,000 hectolitres.

The Budějovice Budvar beer producer has won a dispute with the international group Anheuser-Busch InBev (ABI) in Portugal over the use of the brand name Budweiser in the country. The Portuguese trademark authority turned down an appeal by InBev in which it challenged a 2003 decision to block the registration of four of its products with the name Budweiser. The Czech beer maker has been selling its own traditional Budweiser brand in Portugal since the 1990’s. Budvar and Anheuser-Busch have had legal disputes over the use of Budweiser in most countries around the world for more than a century.

The leading Czech beer producer, Pilsner Urquell, has announced a slight increase in the prices of its bottled and canned beer on the domestic market. The Plzeň-based group says it will not raise the price of its world-famous brew sold in kegs and tanks, ostensibly to attract more people to pubs and restaurants. But experts say the move will do little to reverse the trend which has seen more and more Czechs having a beer at home rather than out on the town.
