Prague Castle, the Cathedral of St Vitus, Charles Bridge and the astronomical clock on Old Town Square are some of the architectural jewels that attract millions of visitors to Prague every year. What is special about the city is its historic authenticity documenting the city’s urban development of over a thousand years. The integral complex of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque buildings, its romantic cobbled alleys and gas lamps give visitors the impression that they have travelled back in time.

The city of Prague is one of the most beautiful in the world but no one visiting the Czech Republic should miss the South Bohemian jewel that is Český Krumlov, marking 25 years since its addition to UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites.

Petr Kučera was a successful journalist and later pursued a career in politics. But twenty years ago he decided to swap the hustle and bustle of Prague for life in the country. This year, Prague, along with Telč and Český Krumlov, celebrates 25 years as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the first edition of our miniseries marking this special anniversary, we visit the town of Telč in the Vysočina region.

The city of Jihlava hides a well-kept secret. Not many people know that one of the best known and admired composers of late 19th century spent the forming years of his life right here. Our reporter Vít Pohanka traveled to the heart of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands to find out more.

Built on a small hill called Zelená hora near Žďár nad Sázavou, it is one of the most spectacular and yet unassuming sights in the Czech Republic. The architectural significance of the church on the border of the historic lands of Bohemia and Moravia was officially recognized by UNESCO in 1994 when it became the third site in the country to be included in the World Heritage List – preceded only by Prague and the city of Telč.

Young entrepreneur Ondřej Slačálek bought a medieval fortress in Malešov, near Kutná Hora, and restored it to its former glory.

Louny is a town near Prague with unique Gothic landmarks and a rich history. It is also a gateway to České středohoří, known in English as the Czech Middle Mountains, with many tourist trails and picturesque spots around the Ohře River.

Duchcov Castle or Dux (in the original German) is a place with a proud history dating back 800 years. The castle’s greatest boom was in a time when the domain belonged to the aristocratic family of Wallenstein.

With a history dating back to the 15th century, Prague’s U Medvídků was in its day frequented by the likes of Jaroslav Hašek and Karel Čapek. Today it is a classic, old school beer hall-type pub and one of the best-known purveyors of Budvar in the capital.
