The troupe Prague Burlesque introduced the Czech capital to the revived burlesque art form – a theatrical, glamorous and relatively modest take on striptease – in 2007 and have been performing at various venues in the city ever since. The M.C. and mastermind of the show is David N. Jahn, a sometime musician who was born in Zurich to Czech parents but moved to Prague to study.

Miloš Zeman’s victory in the country’s first direct presidential election has highlighted some deep divisions in Czech society. A large part of the future president’s support came from voters in rural areas and small towns, while his rival, Karel Schwarzenberg, won the backing of city-dwellers, higher income groups, and young people. In this special edition of One on One, my guest Jiří Pehe discusses these divisions, Miloš Zeman’s appeal to Czech voters – and the main factors behind his triumph.

After fleeing from her native Prague in August 1968, Liba Taylor made a new life for herself in the UK, where she studied photography under a member of the prestigious Magnum Photos group. From her base in London she travelled extensively, documenting the work of major international humanitarian agencies – including the UNHCR, UNICEF and Save the Children – in some of the poorest and most desolate spots on earth.

On the border of the districts of Vinohrady and Žižkov is where you will find The Tavern, a cosy bar and burger restaurant that has become a big hit since it opened just over a year ago. Indeed, a leading Czech food critic recently offered a simple explanation as why to The Tavern is always full: Because it has the best burgers in Prague. It’s owned and run by Lori Wyant Selby and her husband Dean, an American couple who are long-term residents of the city.

In Černošice, a short train ride from Prague, there is a small but eye-catching church – with lots of curved surfaces and a rough concrete finish – which has appeared in design magazines and is frequently visited by architecture enthusiasts. It belongs to the Církev Bratrská, a Czech Protestant denomination, and its minister is Pavel Paluchnik, who is only 31 years of age.

Josef Svoboda is a professor, Arctic ecologist and author. Born in 1929 in Prague, Mr. Svoboda studied science and philosophy at Masaryk and Charles universities. He was imprisoned for nine years by the communist regime in 1949 for alleged treason and espionage and then emigrated to Canada in 1968, where he has lived ever since. I began by asking Svoboda about his earliest memories of growing up in pre-war Czechoslovakia.

Efforts to commemorate ethnic Germans murdered by Czechs during a wave of post-war expulsions have frequently led to heated debate in this country. One such controversy is the subject of Jan Gebert’s debut documentary Stone Games, which follows a vocal campaign by a group of locals to remove a monument to eight Sudeten Germans killed in the north Bohemian town of Nový Bor in 1945. The protesters are led by an eccentric would-be politician – and their cause attracts the attention of national figures, including now presidential candidate Miloš

Jan Kodeš recently lined up with the rest of the 1980 Davis Cup winning team alongside the Czech team that won this year’s trophy, amid joyous scenes at Prague’s O2 Arena. Kodeš, who is 66, was a member of the Czechoslovak Davis Cup side for 17 years, and later served as its non-playing captain. But his greatest successes came as a player at the French Open, which he won twice, and Wimbledon, where he lifted the trophy once.

Today 70 and in retirement in Prague, Mirko Dolák can claim to be one of the few Czechs to have fought for the US in the Vietnam War. Indeed, his buddies in the Marines gave him the nickname “Czech”. He later spent nearly three decades working for the Government Accountability Office, which uncovers waste and corruption in US federal agencies.
