A Jewish cultural festival held in the Polish capital Warsaw every September re-creates Jewish life in one street of the city's former ghetto. The festival is dedicated to Nobel Prize winner Issac Bashevis Singer, who began his career in Warsaw before emigrating to the US in the mid-1930s. Radio Polonia's Michal Kubicki reports.

Central European states which joined the EU in 2004 are hopping mad at delays in extending border-less travel - what's known as the Schengen zone - to include them. It was meant to happen next year but Brussels says technical and legal problems will push the date back to 2008. Some states see political - not technical - reasons for the delay. Genie Johnson reports from Vienna.

Europe's Roma often live on the margins of society, suffering a variety of problems from high unemployment to relatively low life expectancy. In the Czech Republic a new report highlights what seems to be a disturbing trend - the creation of Roma ghettos. The study, ordered by a Czech government ministry, shows that more and more Romanies in the Czech Republic are finding themselves literally living on the edge of society. Radio Prague's Rob Cameron reports.

Around Europe children have been returning back to school recently. Many parents in Slovenia are unhappy with the relatively high kindergarten costs. Now, one political party is seeking to take advantage of parents' dissatisfaction, and bring the issue to parliament. Michael Manske of Radio Slovenia International has the story.

Internationally acclaimed Hungarian poet and novelist, Gyorgy Faludy died a week ago at his Budapest home. He was 95. Faludy's life was remarkable - he fled the Nazis and later the communists, was a member of the United States army in 1943, lost his family in the Holocaust, was arrested in Hungary in the 1950s, took part in the 1956 revolution and when it was crushed went into exile again, this time for 33 years.

Tomo Kriznar is a Slovenian human rights activist who was sent to Darfur - the conflict torn western region of Sudan - as a special envoy for Slovenia's President Janez Drnovsek. There he was arrested and spent six weeks in a Sudanese prison on spying charges. Ksenija Samardzija Matul has the story:

A young Austrian woman who was abducted as a ten year old girl and spent the next eight years in a tiny cellar spoke to the media this week about her experience. In television and newspaper interviews Natascha Kampusch said she had often thought of escape and had dreamt of killing her captor.

Transatlantic relations have been a bit rocky in recent years with differences over the war in Iraq, the Kyoto treaty on global warming, and the International Criminal Court. Now a new report seeks the opinion of people in twelve European countries on what they see as the main global threats. The German Marshall fund commissioned the report and their Director for Central and Eastern Europe, Pavol Demes, spoke to Anca Dragu about its findings:

A professor from the University of Wisconsin in the United States arrived in Poland recently - with some very precious hand luggage. In fact they were parchments - documents written by popes and Polish monarchs in the 13th century. Mirek Topolanek's right-wing ministers have big ideas - including a flat tax and slashing bureaucracy - but apparently no support in parliament, and could be tendering their resignations by the end of the month.
