The National Museum has opened a major new exhibit on St. Wenceslas, the patron saint of the Czech lands, who was also one of their earliest and most important rulers. What is particularly significant about this exhibit is that it brings together a collection of the most precious manuscripts and items relating to Saint Wenceslas over the course of roughly 700 years.

The deadline has passed for political parties and movements to register for lower house elections at the end of May. More have come forward than last time round four years ago with many smaller parties given a real chance of getting a seat in parliament.

Britain’s Prince Charles spent a day in Moravia on Monday, and paid a visit to the country’s first ‘eco-friendly’ village - Hostětín, in the White Carpathian mountains. Crowds of people lined the streets to greet the Prince of Wales, known for his passionate interest in sustainable development and organic farming. The Czech Republic’s biggest car maker, Škoda Auto, has just announced mixed results for last year. Car sales hit a new record high, but turnover was down and profit dropped by around two-thirds compared with the year before. This year also looks like being a big challenge.

Good English teachers are in great demand in the Czech Republic. While more and more children want to learn the language, schools are facing a serious lack of qualified teachers. The Prague Post Endowment Fund is aiming to improve the situation by organizing The Best Teacher of English Competition.

The chairman of the Civic Democratic Party, Mirek Topolánek, is in hot water over an interview he gave to a gay magazine. It included controversial statements about two members of the government, as well as the suggestion that the Church had made idiots of the masses. Mr Topolánek later apologised, but has come in for some criticism – including from inside his own party.

Sunday night was the opening night for the top three submissions to this year’s Prague Playwriting Contest at the city’s Divadlo Ponec. The winner of the contest, who will take home a cash prize, will be announced at the closing night next Tuesday. One of the playwrights in the race for the award is Josh Kaston. His submission “The Great Indoors” is set in the rural Southern United States, where a Czech-British couple gets stranded. Britain’s Prince Charles will be arriving in the Czech Republic at the weekend, as he and his wife Camilla continue a trip through Central Europe. In addition to visiting sights of his choosing around the country, Charles will likely be checking in on the legacy he has left in the country from several previous trips.

Environment Minister Jan Dusík resigned on Thursday over plans to modernise the controversial Prunéřov coal-fired power plant in north-west Bohemia. Mr Dusík said he’d come under pressure from prime minister Jan Fischer to issue an environmental impact assessment for the plant, despite evidence suggesting that Prunéřov could be made cleaner and more efficient if the investor decided to spend more money.
