The district of Prague 1 has given permission for the installation of a new memorial honouring the more than 2,500 Czechoslovak airmen who served in Britain’s Royal Air Force in WW II. Officials acted with a deadline looming: the statue, an imposing bronze winged lion, is to be unveiled in less than three weeks. The problem is that the site was not approved by the National Heritage Institute, which says the location is highly inappropriate.

Prague’s multi-purpose Opencard scheme which was to provide users with an efficient means of paying for public transport, parking, and serve as a library card has been dogged by problems from the outset. Now it threatens to turn into a nightmare for over one million users. The card’s days are numbered and Prague City Hall has failed to secure continued licencing until a new system is up and running.

The number of registered cases of HIV in the Czech Republic jumped rapidly: in the first four months of 2014 almost one hundred new cases were registered. Although the Czech Republic still has a relatively low incidence of the deadly virus, the rising number of cases is a cause for concern.

The Czech Republic’s minister of defence wants to see an increase in the country’s military spending, reversing a trend of recent years. Justifying this call, Martin Stropnický said on Thursday that the crisis in Ukraine was a warning that a military conflict in Europe was not out of the question.
