The Golden Barb is the name of an award that the Prague-based NGO Centre for Integration of Foreigners hands out for the worst contribution to the field of integration of foreigners. It also gives out the Naděžda prize for the best practice or policy in the field. This year’s awards were presented on Thursday evening. Jan Richter spoke to the centre’s Vladislav Gunther after the ceremony.

Around 20 of the 669 mostly Jewish children saved from Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia by Nicholas Winton recreated their 1939 journey by steam train across Europe this week, arriving at Liverpool St on Friday morning. Sir Nicholas – now 100 years old - was there to welcome them. Also there on the platform was Štefan Füle, minister for European Affairs and a former Czech ambassador, and it was there at Liverpool St that he spoke to Radio Prague’s Rosie Johnston.

The Year 1989 through the Eyes of Photographers is the title of a new exhibition that has just got underway at Prague’s Old Town Hall. It brings together around 300 photographs capturing events preceding the fall of communism in Czechoslovakia, and the drama of the Velvet Revolution itself. Daniela Mrázková of Czech Press Photo is the exhibition’s curator.

On Wednesday the ten most important political figures in the country stood before the TV cameras at Prague Castle and vowed that October’s early elections would go ahead as planned, after the Constitutional Court shocked the country by announcing they would be postponed. That group of ten angry men has now divided into two – one political, one executive – amid feverish preparations to change the Constitution.

Tuesday’s Constitutional Court decision came as quite a surprise to many people, not least constitutional lawyers, who questioned the court’s right to postpone elections. Earlier today, I spoke to Charles University’s Jan Kudrna – an expert on the Constitution and one of the most vociferous critics of the move – I asked him whether he thought the Constitutional Court had overstepped its mandate:

Political leaders have vowed to do everything possible to allow early elections to be held in October, after the Constitutional Court shocked the country by announcing they would be delayed. The court said it needed time to examine a complaint from a disgruntled MP – Miloš Melčák - who claimed his constitutional right to serve out his mandate in full had been curtailed by the shortened electoral term. Before the Court has ruled, it said, there can be no vote.

Two years after a breakthrough verdict by the European Court for Human Rights which denounced racial segregation in Czech schools, Romany children still face widespread discrimination. That’s the conclusion of a group of Czech NGOs that say the Czech Education Ministry has shown good will but has introduced few practical measures to improve the situation.

It’s the first day of school, autumn is nearly upon us, and as you might have noticed there are changes too on the Radio Prague website. Radio Prague’s Editor-in-Chief Gerald Schubert came into the studio to explain what’s new and why.

The Slovak-owned low-cost carrier SkyEurope, the second largest airline at Prague Airport, has gone bankrupt. The airline has had problems over the past several months and on Monday night, it filed for bankruptcy. The collapse of SkyEurope has left thousands of Czechs stranded abroad, and many more with flights booked.

The Czech Republic’s footballers are currently preparing for their most important match in a long time – a clash with Slovakia on Saturday that they have to win to keep alive their hopes of reaching next year’s World Cup. Record goal scorer Jan Koller has come out of international retirement for the big game, while playmaker Tomáš Rosický is also back, though it’s not clear whether he’ll be fit. So what’s the mood like in the Czech camp ahead of what’s sure to be an intense match in Bratislava? That’s a question I put to goalkeeper Petr Čech.
