The Czech capital Prague on Tuesday launched its candidature for the 2016 Olympic Games, with a ceremony to sign its official bid. The city has never hosted such a huge sporting event and currently lacks the necessary stadia and other infrastructure. But Prague officials believe they do have a serious chance - if not in 2016, then four or even eight years later.

You might be familiar with touring photo exhibitions like 'the Earth from the Air' pitching up in your town, but what about a touring refugee-camp? On Tuesday, Prague's Namesti Miru was transformed into a tent city as Medecins Sans Frontieres came to town. The humanitarian organization is in Prague until Sunday, exhibiting a model replica of an African refugee camp. On display are typical living quarters, hospital tents, a communal kitchen, and latrines.

The Czech Republic is still counting the costs from the two devastating floods that hit the country in 1997 and 2002. Just this week in fact the Agriculture Ministry released a report estimating the financial cost of the two great floods at more than 150 billion crowns, or 7.3 billion US dollars. The start of the new school year saw a special anniversary on Monday: 10 years since the revival of Jewish education in Prague. A truck was due to arrive in the small west Bohemian town of Okrouhle Hradiste on Tuesday bearing a most unusual cargo; not a regular consignment of goods, but around 40 greyhounds from Ireland. The animals are being adopted by Czech dog lovers who want to save them from being (often brutally) destroyed - and help these greyhounds enjoy a dignified life in a loving environment.

A new surgical treatment of snoring and sleep apnea has been performed for the first time in the world by Czech doctors in the west Bohemian town of Domazlice. The method was developed by the American company Apneon, which chose the Czech doctor Vaclav Pavelec on the basis of his published specialist studies.
