While the Coen Brothers’ No Country For Old Men has made world headlines for sweeping the boards at the Academy Awards, here in the Czech Republic THE story has been the success of the Czech musician Markéta Irglová, who with the Irish singer Glen Hansard took the Oscar for best original song with their composition Falling Slowly. Markéta Irglová, who is just 19 years of age, has become the first Czech to win that award. What's more, her acceptance speech went down a storm.

It was 60 years ago Monday, that Czech President Edvard Beneš, under enormous pressure, capitulated and appointed a communist government led by Klement Gottwald. This event, known as the February putsch is viewed by many as a tragic blunder on the part of the president – had he stood firm, and not accepted the resignations of the non-communist parties in the government, which outnumbered the communists, the ascendancy of one party rule may have been averted.

A court in Hradec Králové sentenced a male nurse to life in prison on Thursday for murdering seven patients and trying to kill ten more. Petr Zelenka, 31, will spend the rest of his life behind bars, after being found guilty of giving lethal injections to patients at a hospital in Havličkův Brod. The conviction makes him the worst serial killer in the country’s post-communist history.

Czech troops stationed in Kosovo as part of the KFOR multinational peace-keeping force, were called in on Thursday to reinforce local police units during a rally held at a border crossing between Serbia and Kosovo. It was their first call to action in newly independent Kosovo, unsettled by escalating Serbian protests.
