Roztoky, which is just a fifteen minute drive from Prague, is a quiet little town overlooking the River Vltava. With the exception of its beautiful chateau, it is not a place that has tended to attract much attention. That was until last month, when a row broke out between town councillors and some local residents over an order that the administration said had come from Brussels.

Two of the biggest names in Czech football faced each other on Tuesday night, with striker Milan Baros and his club Liverpool playing host to Petr Cech's Chelsea. The prize: a place in the final of football's greatest club competition, the Champions League.

The general director of Czech Railways resigned on Tuesday after only 27 months in office. Petr Kousal was the 8th director of the company in the 12 years of its existence. Although the financial losses of the Czech Republic's biggest employer have decreased significantly in recent years, the company continues to face many challenges from both within and without.

The aura of the Wild West has been a source of fascination for many Czechs down through the years. Practically every town has a Wild-West-themed bar and Country and Western music is also hugely popular. There is even regular Czech participation at the World Championship in Wild West disciplines such as lassoing and tomahawk throwing, which are held each year in the US. This year the Czech team actually won two competitions and were highly placed in three others.

Czech TV's CT 24, the first 24-hour news channel in the country's history, successfully launched its trial broadcast this Monday. The service is currently only available on the internet, on cable, or via satellite. For the next four months, CT 24 will only broadcast eighteen hours on week days and sixteen hours on the weekends, in order to test the waters, weed out all potential problems, and get a head start before other television stations with similar plans enter the market. Czech TV will launch its full 24-hour service in September.

It's a beautiful sunny day here in Prague and I'm standing on Prague's Letna Hill overlooking the Vltava River and the Old Town. Tourists come here today, not only for the breathtaking view but to see the large ticking metronome, which was erected here in 1991. But for the local residents this spot holds a darker memory - little do the tourists around me know that exactly fifty years ago, at this very site, some six hundred men and women were working around the clock to create the world's biggest monument ever to honour the Soviet Communist party

Over the next week Radio Prague will be marking the 60th anniversary of the end of Word War II with a number of special reports, ranging from a trip to the English village where the Czechoslovak government in exile were based to the first military parade on Prague's Letna plain since the fall of communism.

Exactly three years ago, two young Czech cycling enthusiasts, Michal Jon and Lucie Kovarikova, set off to conquer the world on their bicycles. As planned, they returned back home on Sunday, having pedalled almost 69,000 kilometres in all continents. The couple are the first Czechs to have cycled around Greenland, the first Czech cyclists to have ridden into the Antarctic and Lucie Kovarikova is the first Czech woman to cycle around the world.

Until sixteen years ago the 1st of May was celebrated in grandiose style, with huge parades on Letna - the large open park to the north of Prague Castle. To this day Czech communists - mostly in their 60s and 70s - still gather here every year to hear Communist leaders speak. Music plays, sausages are sold, and supporters cheer on a famous actress or two as she pledges support. Though, it's a far cry from the old days - fewer visitors, and the odd heckler or two - in days of yore they would have been quickly swept away by men in green uniforms -

That's the sound of more than 13,000 loyal Czech fans who packed Prague's T-Mobile arena last night. They came to support the Czech national team in its last world hockey championship practice game, a very close one which they lost by one point against Canada. The Championships begin on Saturday in Vienna, and here, all eyes will be on the Czech team - which has 26 NHL players on the roster, including Jaromir Jagr. But it's not only the Czech players that are getting attention - it's also Czech referees. There will be more of them at the championships
