The International Olympic Committee at its 115th session in Prague, has elected the host city of the XXIst Olympic Winter Games in 2010. "The XXIst Olympic Winter Games in 2010 are awarded to the city of Vancouver." The President of the IOC, Mr Jacques Rogge announced the winning city at Prague's Hilton Hotel on Wednesday afternoon. Radio Prague's Pavla Horakova was at the venue.

Thousands of people waited for hours on Thursday to catch a glimpse of the medieval Bohemian crown jewels. The opening of the Crown Chamber was quite a ritual in itself, as it required the presence of the holders of no less than seven keys - the President of the state, and the highest political and the Church authorities. Czechs are a nation of beer-lovers, and rare is the street which doesn't boast at least one pub. These vary enormously - on one end of the scale the swanky, upmarket bars that cater for tourists and the more discerning locals, and on the other, the traditional, old-fashioned Czech boozer. The Czech capital Prague is hosting the 115th session of the International Olympic Committee which has some important decisions on the agenda. The session officially opened on Tuesday in the presence of many internationally renowned celebrities, sportsmen and politicians, and it was as well a chance to recall the Olympic history of Prague, and prominent Czechs sportsmen.

The Czech scientific satellite Mimosa was successfully launched on Monday from the Russian cosmodrome Plesetsk to a low Earth orbit. The main goal of the mission is to study the atmospheric density that affects low flying satellites, causing them to burn up as they finally re-enter the atmosphere. The whole project was financed through a mutual agreement between the Czech Republic and Russia as part of the repayment of Russia's large debt to the country. Mirna Solic reports:

A former high-ranking Foreign Ministry official was sent to prison for eight years on Monday for plotting to murder a top investigative journalist. Karel Srba, former General Secretary under ex-Foreign Minister Jan Kavan, was found guilty of planning to kill Sabina Slonkova, a reporter for the daily Mlada Fronta Dnes. The plot was foiled when the man hired to kill Ms Slonkova went to the police. The case - the first of its kind in the Czech Republic - attracted enormous media attention. On Monday, Radio Prague introduced its newly designed and expanded website concentrating on Roma issues. At www.romove.cz, visitors find up-to-date information on the situation of the Roma minority in the Czech Republic, contacts for Roma organisations, a list of upcoming or ongoing events on Roma issues such as exhibitions, concerts, and seminars, as well as explanations of Roma history, culture, and tradition.... all of this in five languages. Disabled people from all parts of the Czech Republic gathered in Prague on Monday to protest against the government's proposal for a new law on social services and tax related issues. The protesters are dissatisfied with the distribution of money on regional and local levels, and the organizers from the National Council for the Handicapped say that it does injustice to many disabled people.

Over the weekend, the Czech Republic apologised for the first time to ethnic Germans living in Austria for their expulsion at the hands of the Czechoslovak authorities in the years following WWII. At a European Forum in the Austrian town of Goettweig over the weekend, Czech Prime Minister Vladimir Spidla said Czechs regretted that these events and actions ever happened.
