Since the Czechs joined the European Union on May 1st questions over Roma identity, tradition, and roles in civil society have become more apt than ever in the Czech Republic and abroad, questions experts and Roma representatives aim to tackle in a series of week-long discussions in Prague. The discussions will be part of the 6th annual Khamoro Festival now underway, a festival that has become the byword for the celebration of Roma culture and music.

On Wednesday night millions of football fans around Europe will watch the final of the Champions League, the biggest, most glamorous club competition in the history of the game. Few of them will know the story of Europe's first ever international club competition, and the forerunner of the Champions League, the Mitropa Cup.

On Thursday the Slovak prime minister, Mikulas Dzurinda, made his first visit to Prague since both Slovakia and the Czech Republic took the historic step of joining the European Union, just three weeks ago. Public Private Partnership - or PPP for short - meaning cooperation with the private sector in realising public projects - has recently become quite a catch-phrase here in the Czech Republic. In Prague this week, a conference was held where representatives of the public and private sectors came together to find ways of optimising co-operation. The Czech paper Mlada Fronta Dnes on Thursday carried a dramatic headline that seemed to confirm British fears of an influx of penniless Czech Roma after the Czech Republic joined the EU. The headline read "Embassy under Roma Siege" and the article reports on Czech citizens - apparently mainly Roma - who had failed to find a job in Britain and had no money to get back home, and were now demanding help from the Czech Embassy in London. Wine has been produced and enjoyed in the Czech lands for hundreds of years. Legend even has it that vineyards were first cultivated by Prince Borivoj as far back as the ninth century. Although the Czech Republic's proud vinicultural tradition suffered under communism, when mass production techniques severely compromised quality, Czech wine has been making something of a comeback since 1989.
