The annual Summer Film School, which gets underway in the south Moravian town of Uherske Hradiste on Friday, is the most important event of its kind in the Czech Republic. Several thousand mostly young people will have a unique opportunity to not only watch films but also take part in open discussions with directors, writers and actors. Jiri Kralik is the director of the school, and though he is too young to have been involved in the school from the very beginning, he told Radio Prague a little about its history.

The producer of one of the Czech Republic's most famous beers - Pilsner Urquell - announced on Wednesday that for the first time ever, the famous brew will be produced outside the city of Plzen. Pilsner Urquell, owned by the beer giant South African Breweries, announced that it was planning to open a satellite brewery in the Polish town of Tychy, in the heavily industrial Katovice area. The Czech Republic is playing an active role in helping to ease the plight of people in war-torn Chechnya, which in recent years has experienced two wars when fighting for independence from Russia. One of the Czech organizations operating in the region is the Czech Catholic Charity. Catholic Bishop Vaclav Maly and the head of the charity, Jaroslav Kopriva spent a week in the region earlier this month to see the Czech humanitarian aid working. Alena Skodova reports:

The case involving an alleged plot to kill the Czech investigative reporter, Sabina Slonkova took a new turn on Tuesday. Because one of the prime suspects is a former senior foreign ministry official, the Czech President Vaclav Havel has now suggested that the man's boss at the time, former foreign minister Jan Kavan, should resign from his posts in international organisations. There are countries in the world where threats and even murders of journalists are no exception. Between 1992 and 2001, 389 journalists were killed around the world, 18 of them women. Only 91 reporters died while covering armed conflicts. The majority were investigative journalists. Only 20 cases have been solved and the murderers punished. Is Czech Republic becoming dangerous for journalists too? Pavla Horakova has more.

Police arrested four people on Monday in connection with an alleged plot to kill a top investigative journalist. The four - who include a former senior government official - allegedly conspired to kill Sabina Slonkova, a journalist with the leading daily Mlada Fronta Dnes, in the most high-profile case in the Czech Republic's post-Communist history. The Czech Republic's second largest city, Brno, is preparing for massive redundancies at several local companies. Although the lay-offs are expected to cost thousands of jobs in a city of half a million people, the local authorities say they they will have little chance of finding new jobs unless a new strategic investor arrives. A number of Czech customs officers, policemen and employees of the Ministry of Trade and Industry are currently attending a special course in the United States. With security now a huge international concern, the Czech officials are being taught how to combat the smuggling of weapons of mass destruction. And law makers would tell you that the country's current legislation bans discrimination of women in any form.
