The Theater of Estates - or Stavovske Divadlo - is the last existing theater where Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart featured his operas. Mozart lived in Prague for some time, and composed a number of pieces here, such as the Prague Symphony and the opera Don Giovanni. The city is proud of the heritage of the great composer and since next year is the 250th anniversary of Mozart's birth, Prague is already now planning great celebrations.

Like Vienna and Budapest, Prague also was once famous for its café culture. The coffeehouse tradition - which was interrupted by the communist regime that took power after the Second World War - has today a number of followers. To the list of famous cafés that were re-established in the nineties - like Vaclav Havel's old hangout, Café Slavia - has now been added another one - the famous cubist Grand Café Orient on the first floor of the House of Black Madonna.

The largest Paris private photo-gallery - Galerie VU is currently featuring selection of its collections in the Prague Langhans Gallery. What you can see there is work of 28 contemporary photographers from different countries of the world. As the Langhans Gallery spokeswoman Dagmar Cujanova says, it is the first time they decided to present another commercial gallery in their rooms.

Post-War travellers Jiri Hanzelka and Miroslav Zikmund are extremely well-known in the Czech Republic and elsewhere for their travel reporting and best selling books. Jiri Hanzelka passed away two years ago but Mr Zikmund is still going strong at 86; on Thursday he opened an exhibition of their photographs at Prague Castle, and spoke to Radio Prague about the two men's travels and international fame.

Today's Arts takes a look at the Czech literary phenomenon that is Michal Viewegh. Loved and hated in equal measure in the Czech Republic, he is yet to take the English-speaking market by storm. When he does, we too can expect to see his face all over the covers of magazines, and stands in bookshops dedicated to his considerable output. I met up with Michal Viewegh to ask him about how it was to be a writer in the current Czech climate.

When I first heard the band Gaia Mesiah play I was struck by their attitude, spunk and fighting spirit. They are definitely not afraid to speak out about the way they see the world. The core of the band is made up of three Czech women and one Australian man. You can feel a wide variety of influences in their music but above all, you can feel an incredible surge of energy. I spoke to drummer Misha Cortez.

Prague Rudolfinum Galery last week opened an exhibition of a very remarkable, though almost unknown Czech artist - Alen Divis. He is a significant artistic figure from the first half of 20th century, who was researched very little up until today. The exhibition at the Rudolfinum presents his work for the first time, and gives an overview of his life.

The great Czech actor and comedian Jan Werich was born 100 years ago this past Sunday. Together with his life-long friend and long-time acting partner Jiri Voskovec (also known as George Voskovec) - who was just a few months younger - he made the so-called "Liberated Theatre" of the 1920's and 1930's famous — it remains an icon of pre-war Czechoslovakia culture. Voskovec and Werich were pioneers of avant-garde theatre, but also gifted comedians, singers and writers.

A violin made in the 17th century by the famous Italian violin-maker Nicolaus Amati, and many other outstanding musical instruments are part of the collection at the Czech Museum of Music. The museum was reopened in December at a new location - in a beautifully reconstructed old Palace in Karmelitska Street in Prague's Mala Strana district.

Czechoslovakia as well as other Central European countries had a large Jewish community before the Second World War. Many of its Jewish citizens perished in concentration camps and survivors had to face up to the horrors of what they had been through. Many also felt a need to tell others about what had happened in the death camps. This helped to originate a lot of good films in post-war Czechoslovakia.
