Today’s song is by the group Alkehol and is called “Až já budu bohatej” - when I get rich. The word to listen out for is “prachy” which is a frequently used slang expression for money – and the choice is no coincidence –what with the economic crisis and a looming record budget deficit next year money is the operative word in most conversations these days.

Welcome to SoundCzech. Two decades ago, the current minister for human rights and minorities Michael Kocáb was a musician. In 1988 his band Výběr was allowed to release their self-titled album after being banned by the authorities for several years. Today we are going to play a song from that album, called “Snaživec” or “Eager Beaver”. Just a year before the fall of the communist regime, audiences understood its lyrics as a very fitting description of a communist official trying to jump on the perestroika bandwagon.

This week, we'll be listening to a song by Karel Kryl, one of the most respected Czech folk singers ever to have lived. The song comes from Kryl's first album, 'Bratříčku, zavírej vrátka', released in 1969 – it's called 'Salome', and all about King Herod's famed seductress.
