One of the most significant results of the NATO summit held last week in Prague was NATO's invitation for seven countries in Central and Eastern Europe to join the alliance in 2004. One of them is Slovakia, formerly part of Czechoslovakia, together with the Czech Republic, which became a NATO member three years ago. In an exclusive interview for Radio Prague, David Vaughan asked the Slovak Prime Minister, Mikulas Dzurinda what impact Slovakia's membership in NATO would have on Czech-Slovak relations?

"Give Peace a Chance" is a discussion forum that was held in Prague parallel to the NATO summit. Bringing together a number of experts, it discussed topics varying from human rights issues to the use of armaments. One of the topics discussed at the forum was the arms industry and the possibilities for changing the terms of the arms trade. Dita Asiedu was at the seminar and brings back this report:

"Give Peace a Chance" is a discussion forum held during the NATO summit offering a series of alternative seminars that are open to the public. The Prague Nato Summit came to an end on Friday afternoon, with the second day's agenda including meetings of the NATO-Russia Council, the NATO-Ukraine Commission and the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council. Radio Prague's Ian Willoughby was at Prague's Congress Centre for the whole of the summit; Ian, could you briefly sum up what have been the key issues of the summit?

Parallel to the NATO leaders' discussions, a student forum called the Prague Atlantic Student Summit is taking place at the Congress Centre in Prague. Over 180 undergraduate and graduate students from more than 35 NATO and partner countries have gathered in Prague to discuss the future of the Alliance and the new security challenges it faces. RP's David Vaughan spoke with two student participants from Romania:

With presidents, heads of government and foreign ministers from 40 countries in Prague for the NATO summit it is not surprising that numerous bilateral meetings have been taking place on the fringes of the summit itself. One such example is Wednesday's one on one meeting between the Czech Prime Minister Vladimir Spidla and his Slovak counterpart Mikulas Dzurinda, who discussed the possibility of a joint air defense system. Such a plan would have been unrealistic had Slovakia not been invited to join NATO.

Prague is seeing history in the making. At a two day summit NATO has defined new goals, plans for reform and invited seven East European states to join the alliance - in a move which will take the alliance into former Soviet territory. As US President George W. Bush put it:

Protesters who have come to demonstrate against the NATO summit are not the only ones to have doubts about the alliance. Others, however, have chosen a different way of voicing their opposition. Throughout the days of the summit, a peaceful discussion forum is being held in Prague's Hotel Olsanka, which is looking at alternative ways of securing peace in the world.
