The Interior Minister, Frantisek Bublan, is planning to meet representatives of six Muslim organisations in the Czech Republic next Monday, the ministry's spokeswoman said. They are to discuss the attacks on Danish and Norwegian embassies in the Middle East provoked by the printing of cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad in Danish and other European papers. Czech Muslim organisations said in a joint statement on Monday that the publication of the cartoons was a sign of hatred and Islamophobia. They called on personalities from the political, religious and cultural spheres to stand up against its signs and support understanding and dialogue.

The publication of caricatures of the prophet Mohammed in a Danish newspaper has brought violent reactions in some parts of the Muslim world, and heated debate in Europe about the balance between freedom of expression and respect for different beliefs. Indirectly, the Czech Republic has also found itself in the firing line.

Representatives of the Czech Christian, Muslim and Jewish faiths have issued a joint statement condemning euthanasia and calling for changes to a new criminal code recently approved by the lower house. The new law does not set a minimum sentence for assisting in so-called mercy killings, which critics say opens the way to euthanasia.

The religious leaders - issuing a joint statement for the first time - said the practice went against the Hippocratic Oath, and called for greater funding for hospices and carers.

When it comes to coverage of conflict in the Middle East, such as US military operations in Iraqi towns to wipe out remaining "Taliban" groups, or the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, how objective and trustworthy is mainstream Czech media? Does it just stick to the facts or does it allow political opinion to slip in? A discussion organised by Prague's Arab association Arabesque and the Association for International Affairs focused on just that.

The Czech non-profit organisation the Association for International Affairs held a public discussion on Tuesday looking at differences in approach towards international terrorism between the United States and the European Union. Speakers were the editor of the right-wing National Review, John O'Sullivan, and French political scientist Dominique Moissy. For over an hour the two discussed differences between the US and the EU since 9/11, but, as Jan Velinger found out, their discussion quickly shifted to Iraq.

Rob Cameron's guest on this week's One on One is Sahib al-Nassir, an Iraqi-born architect turned bar owner who's made Prague his home. Sahib studied architecture in Prague and Baghdad, but in 1977 he decided to flee the regime of Saddam Hussein and live permanently abroad, first in London, then in Prague. He now owns a popular bar called Cheers, and is also involved in property development.

Czech Muslims have strongly condemned the London bombings, for which an Islamist terrorist group has claimed responsibility. In a statement, the Brno-based Islamic Foundation expressed solidarity with the victims and their families and condemned those who, they said, abused the word of God in an attempt to justify their crimes.

With so much discussion under way in Europe over Turkey's ambitions to join the European Union, the Czech Republic has also engaged in the debate. The Czech government supports Turkey's ambitions, and Czech Euro-MPs confirmed this support on Wednesday. But how do Czechs back home feel? Would they support Turkey joining the European Union? Since the Iron Curtain fell, Czech society has been increasingly exposed to the influence of other cultures. There are not only western tourists in Prague. Quite a few students and entrepreneurs, but also refugees, have come from Muslim countries, bringing elements of their culture and way of life with them. So what is the position of Muslims in the Czech Republic, and what attitudes and pre-conceptions do Czechs have about Islam? Martin Mikule has been finding out.
