The Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague will on Thursday acquire a collection of works by Czech art nouveau painter Alfons Mucha from a Swiss donor, Czech-born Věra Neumannová, a spokewoman for museum said. The museum will present the acquisition, its biggest since 1995, at a press conference on Thursday. The painter Alfons Mucha lived and worked in France for a large part of his life, becoming famous mainly for his posters, advertisements and illustrations made in a decorative "Mucha style." The museum's previous biggest acquisition was a part of the Karlštejn treasure – a collection of items linked to the 14th-century Roman Emperor and King of Bohemia Charles IV. The museum received it from the heirs of Czech entrepreneur and collector Jindřich Waldes, whose family gained it in restitution in the 1990s.

On Friday, Scottish composer Geraldine Mucha passed away in Prague, which has been her home for most of the past 70 years. Author of numerous musical works, large-scale orchestral pieces, variations on folk songs and chamber pieces, Geraldine came to post-war Czechoslovakia with her husband Jiří Mucha, the son of the famous artists Alphonse Mucha. For the past twenty years, she has been the keeper of her father-in-law’s legacy, but her life’s pursuit of music also helped pave the way for female composers of the younger generations.

The Scottish-born composer Geraldine Mucha, daughter-in-law of Alphonse Mucha, died in Prague on Friday at the age of 95, the ctk news agency reported on Monday. Mrs. Mucha who has lived in Prague since 1945, is reported to have died at home among family and friends. The funeral ceremony is to take place on Monday October 22, at Prague’s Strašnice crematorium.

The National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library in Cedar Rapids reopened its doors to visitors on Saturday, four years and one month after the devastating floods of 2008. The expanded museum was showcased during a two-day celebration over the weekend that included a parade, a video-projection light show, performances by children’s song and dance ensembles and a marionette theatre performance. The museum’s biggest pride is a newly opened exhibition of 230 paintings, sculptures and other works by Czech artist Alphonse Mucha .The restoration of the museum and library was made possible through local, national and international assistance. More than 25 million dollars was raised during a capital campaign for flood recovery, to which the Czech Republic donated 10 million crowns.

The Slav Epic, a series of 20 large canvasses chronicling Slavic history by the Art Nouveau painter Alphonse Mucha, will go on display in Prague’s Veletržní Palác on Thursday. The exhibition, which was delayed by several months due to technical issues, is the subject of a long-lasting controversy between the Czech capital and the South Moravian town Moravský Krumlov where the epic was moved after the end of World War II. Officials from the South Moravian town vehemently opposed the relocation of Mucha’s Slav Epic to Prague on grounds that it was the painter’s wish for the work to be displayed in a specially constructed pavilion which the capital has failed to build.

Preparations for the exhibit cost 36 million crowns and consisted of major technical modifications to the exhibition hall. The 20 enormous canvasses have been the subject of much controversy in recent years as the City of Prague has attempted to transfer them from their long residence in the town of Moravský Krumlov. The exhibit is expected to run for at least two years. The painter’s family is seeking a specially constructed area for the work in accordance with his wishes.

The family of painter Alphonse Mucha is preparing a concept for the permanent placement of the Slav Epic in the main train station in Prague. The family’s foundation plans to submit the technical and visual plans for a building that they say will be nearly identical to the painter’s own plan to the City Hall in March. Grandson John Mucha says a part of the family has agreed the idea with the municipal government and the Italian development company responsible for renewing the Art Nouveau station. The twenty canvasses of the masterpiece are currently in a Prague depository, after the city gallery had them moved from Moravský Krumlov last year.

Employees of the Prague City Gallery are packing up the last five canvasses of Alfons Mucha’s 20-strong Slav Epic in Moravský Krumlov and are expected to see them on their way to Prague on Thursday night. The fight over Alfons Mucha’s Slav Epic has soured relations between the Czech capital and Moravský Krumlov which fought in vain to be allowed to keep the collection, pointing out that Prague had not fulfilled the conditions under which the famous Art Nouveau painter bequeathed the Slav Epic to the capital city: building a special pavilion which would do the outsize collection justice. No date has yet been set for when the paintings will be put on display in the Czech capital.

The Prague City Gallery has moved another ten of the 20 canvasses of Alfons Mucha’s Slav Epic to the capital and plans to complete the move in the coming days.
