Heavy rain throughout Wednesday night has swollen rivers in central and westerns parts of the Czech Republic. The town of Radotín near Prague registered 110 mm of precipitation overnight. The Czech Hydro-Meteorological Institute has issued second-degree flood warning for the regions of Prague, Beroun and Pilsen, which will remain in place until Friday morning. Heavy rain is set to continue in the eastern part of the country until Thursday afternoon.

Flood alerts are still in place on several rivers in the Czech Republic as a result of a sudden warming, melting snow in the mountain regions. It has been combined with persistent rain. An extreme flood alert is in place in the north of the country below the Krkonoše, Jizerské and Orlické mountains. Mid-level warnings are in place in the regions of Liberec and Ústí nad Labem. Meteorologists expect water levels to start dropping as of Thursday afternoon.

Melting snow and heavy rainfall have raised water levels on rivers in some parts of the Czech Republic. The worst affected areas are in the regions of Liberec and Děčín in the north of the country, where the highest level flood alerts have been declared. Authorities have also issued flood warnings in the Pilsen and South Bohemian regions. Meanwhile, meteorologists expect more rain and strong winds in the days to come.

Almost CZK 1 billion in European Union grants is to go toward flood prevention measures, redevelopment and the securing of unstable slopes in the Czech Republic, the Ministry of the Environment said on Thursday. Minister Richard Brabec said such problems were a priority as the impact of climate change had become more apparent in recent years. His office has just approved around 200 projects in those areas throughout the country.

Meteorologists are warning that the regions of Olomouc and Moravia-Silesia are likely to see heavy rainfall late Monday and into Tuesday, with the possibility of flooding and first-level flood alerts being issued. The Jeseníky Mountains could see rainfall later taper off for the first snow of the season mid-week.

Heavy rain in the night hours is reported to have caused local floods in the eastern parts of the country. The river Brumovka in the Zlin region burst its banks in several localities, flooding nearby fields, roads and houses and even sweeping a car off the road near the town of Broumov. The driver managed to escape to safety. Water levels are now gradually subsiding and the situation is expected to stabilize in the course of the morning .

Firefighters intervened on Saturday as local flooding and thunderstorms threatened more than 400 children at an organized event on a playing field in Jílovice in the region of Hradec Králové. The children were evacuated from the area, many of them carried to awaiting vehicles in firemens' arms. No persons were hurt in the incident. Flooding affected a number of buildings in local municipalities including Výrava and Librantice.

Municipalities on the upper part of the Berounka River have protested against plans to build an anti-flood detention basin on the river. Representatives of 25 municipalities handed their protest note to the regional authority of Central Bohemia as well as to the agriculture and environment ministers. They argue that the dam would threaten the nearby protected landscape area of Křivoklátsko. The Vltava Water Management authority is considering the anti-flood dam to protect houses along the river from a 100-year flood, which could cover an area of up to 1000 hectares.

Meteorologists have called off a flood alert in the south and north eastern parts of the country where rivers in the Šumava Mountains and Orlické and Jizerské mountain ranges had swollen in the wake of heavy rain. Water levels started subsiding during the night hours and the situation is gradually returning to normal.

Heavy rainfall throughout Monday night led to a rise in water levels on parts of the Otava and Labe rivers. Flood warnings are in effect in Šumava. Levels are still rising in areas, nevertheless the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute expects the situation to improve over the course of Tuesday and for the risk of flooding to diminish.
