Some 10,000 people witnessed the re-enactment of the Battle of Austerlitz near Slavkov, in southern Moravia on Saturday, 207 years after Napoleon’s army beat the Russian and Austrian troops there. 900 people from 11 countries with 60 horses and 15 cannons reenacted parts of the battle on Saturday; this year, they focused on the closing phases and the retreat of the Austrian and Russian armies from the battlefield.

Around eight thousand people braved the weather and arrived at the site of the historic Battle of Austerlitz in South Moravia on Saturday afternoon to watch a re-enactment of the 1805 battle. Some 900 military buffs took part in the annual re-enactment of the operation in which Napoleon defeated the armies of Russian Tzar Alexander I and Austrian Emperor Franz I. Around 20,000 men were killed in the combat, also known as the Battle of Three Emperors, which took place on December 2, 1805 near the town of Slavkov (or Austerlitz in German), south of Brno.

Unknown perpetrators severely damaged a battleground monument near Hradec Králové during the night on Wednesday. Police believe the culprits were trying to steal a part of a statue commemorated to fallen Austrian soldiers in the 1866 Battle of Königgrätz when part of it fell on to the road below. Authorities estimate damage to the memorial, which was restored just six years ago, at between 500,000 and a million crowns. The battleground is an officially preserved area where nearly half a million troops met in a decisive episode of the Austro-Prussian War.

A war memorial with a difference was unveiled this weekend at a famous Napoleonic battlefield near Brno. The life size bronze statue stands out immediately from similar memorials to war heroes and generals from the fact that it features a horse with no one in the saddle.

More than 400 enthusiasts, with 30 horses and 20 cannons, took part in the re-enactment. The original Battle of Chlum occurred on July 3, 1866 between the armies of the Austrian Empire and the Kingdom of Prussia, as part of the Austro-Prussian War.

Czechoslovak fighter pilots commemorated on Saturday the 63rd anniversary of an air combat in the region of Jindrichuv Hradec in south Bohemia. The battle between the Ally forces and German Luftwaffe, which took place on the 24th of August 1944, was one of the biggest Second World War conflicts to take place in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. Some 20 war veterans with their wives and widows of the deceased pilots attended the event, which took place for the 14th time this year.

Doctors said a number of "soldiers" were taken to hospital with bone fractures, eye injuries and even hypothermia. Four thousand history buffs and enthusiasts from 33 countries took part in the biggest ever reconstruction of a Napoleonic battle - performing for a crowd of 30, 000 spectators.
