In recent years, Prague has been attracting more and more visitors who are interested specifically in the local cuisine and beverages. Besides regular food tours there are also special one-off events, such as the Natural Born Butchers’ wine tasting party inspired by the pig slaughter season, combining mostly Bohemian and Moravian wines and specialties made from a traditional Czech breed of pig.

Grand Café Orient in Prague is unique in that it boasts being the only Cubist café in the world. It is located just a few minutes’ walk from Old Town Square -in Celetná Street -in the famous Cubist building House of the Black Madonna designed by architect Josef Gočár.

Downhill skiing and snowboarding are immensely popular in the Czech Republic and there are a slew of mountain ranges and resorts to choose from. Skiers can opt for ski hills like Ještěd near Prague or centres further east, such as Dolní Morava. But today, we visit Špindlerův Mlýn in the Krkonoše Mountains, one of the most popular ski destinations in the country. We’ll check out the ski hill, take a short tour of the town and even bomb down a sled track.

Čestlice is the name of a small village just outside the eastern city limits of Prague. But it is also the location of a giant out-of-town shopping and warehouse complex filled with large box-type supermarkets. Around me I see a Bauhaus, Kika, JYSK, an Elektro World, and a huge Makro store. There is also a large Aqua Centrum here – a swimming centre. It is just off the D1 motorway, which heads towards the city of Brno. But, surprisingly, this place is also home to a newly-opened farmers’ market.

I’m walking along the bicycle and pedestrian path on the right bank of the Vltava river that leads north out of Prague. About two kilometres past Prague Zoo, and it pretty much already feels like I’m out of the capital city completely. To the right in the distance, you can just about see the apartments of the Bohnice district up in the hills. But as far out as it seems you are, in fact the Prague municipal transport system (MHD) has something on offer here, too. Not a tram, or a Metro, or a bus – but rather a ferry service.

Čáslav is a small town 70 kilometres east of Prague, which lies not far from the historical town of Kutná Hora. Situated in the flat plains which lie to the west of the Iron Mountains, or Železné hory, Čáslav has a history spanning back to the 9th century.

The town of Kutná Hora lies just 50 kilometres east of Prague, and is a popular destination for tourists venturing outside the capital in search of more of the Czech Republic’s historical treasures.

Nymburk is a small town located about 30 kilometres north-east of Prague. It is situated on the banks of the Elbe river, which flows westwards from its source in the Krkonoše mountains, and along an area of vast plains stretching from beyond Hradec Králové all the way into Prague. Nymburk lies at the heart of this absolutely flat landscape – there’s not a single hill in sight here.

Mělník is a small town just 30 kilometers north of Prague, situated at the point where the Vltava flows into the mighty Elbe river. It’s the kind of place a visitor can easily pass through without actually seeing – or get the wrong impression from a mere cursory glance.
