With the end of June the school year in the Czech Republic comes to an end, and children receive their school reports. Many of them can now boast good marks and look forward to two months of vacation. But there are also many who are not so happy with their school achievements. Some of them are even scared of severe punishment from their parents, and it is not unusual to hear of cases of children who decide to run away from home at this time of the year.

Every year, tens of thousands of Czechs become victims of a crime. In most cases, they deal with the trauma themselves and seek very little assistance - mostly because it is not offered to them despite the fact that they have the right to compensation and psychological care under Czech legislation. A new campaign launched last month now aims to bring the information closer to crime victims. In today's Talking Point, we speak with Pavel Stern, director of the Czech Probation and Mediation Service, which launched the campaign:

The end of days of the one-size-fits all approach to the prescription of an estimated 20-25% of drugs on the market is nearing in the Czech Republic. With new medical equipment, doctors at Charles University's General Faculty Hospital in Prague can now offer those patients most at risk of suffering from adverse reactions, tailor-made treatment.

The sexual abuse trial of Michael Jackson will long be remembered around the world. The King of Pop was cleared of all ten charges of crimes including child molestation, abduction, and false imprisonment. But despite the magnitude of the accusations, in the Czech Republic, the trial was not as closely followed as in other countries and opinions varied on whether or not Michael Jackson was guilty.

The Czech Association of Singers, Songwriters and Musicians, SAI, which has a few hundred members and is supported by several thousand artists around the country was formed in 1989 to promote all forms of music and protect the rights of artists in the Czech Republic. On Sunday, its board held its annual meeting to assess the current state of the Czech music scene, especially a new copyright law that came into effect this year.

It has been just over a month since Jiri Paroubek was appointed prime minister, the third person to head the Czech government within a year. While Vladimir Spidla stepped down after the failure of the governing Social Democrats in European elections last year, his successor Stanislav Gross was forced to resign a few weeks ago due to questions over his personal finances. Now Jiri Paroubek has come in, and he has about a year to save the government's and in particular the Social Democrats' flagging fortunes before the next parliamentary

Czechs have always been envied for their health care system. Unlike in Britain, the United States, or neighbouring Germany, for example, in the Czech Republic, only a very small percentage of the population have no health insurance. Czechs have a sore throat; they go the doctor and get some tablets, they have a slight temperature and get to stay home on sick leave for a week - all of this covered by insurance, of course.

In recent days Czech towns have been commemorating the end of the Second World War. But among the events of 60 years ago that many prefer not to be reminded of, is the expulsion of the German minority (the so called Sudeten Germans) from Czechoslovakia. The expulsion was the culmination of the clash between Czechs and Germans in the lands of Bohemia and Moravia, which had erupted in such a brutal way during the German occupation. But now even 60 years after the war this event still represents a sensitive issue in Czech public life.

Strangely enough for a report about an art exhibition, we start at a train station - the Main Train Station in the centre of Prague. And this is where on May 1st, International Labour Day, an exhibition aptly called "Workers" was opened by its author - one of the world's most respected photographers - Brazil's Sebastiao Salgado.
