The highly-respected alternative/electronic pop band Tatabojs recently reissued four of their best-known albums Futuretro, Biorytmy, Nanoalbum and Kluci kde ste? complete with additional bonus tracks, demo versions, video footage and other rarities. If you’ve never heard the band before, now’s your chance: in this edition of the Sunday Music Show we’ll be featuring material from their original releases and we’ll talk a bit about the band’s history.

She was born to a Czech mother and Macedonian father. Despite this fact, she speaks fluent Czech having been raised mainly in the Czech Republic. She doesn’t sing in Czech too much, however. This week Radio Prague’s Sunday music show profiles Jana Vérova - a young musician whose music is both raw and poetic and deeply rooted in her place of birth –the former Sudetenland. Although she has recorded just one album she regularly plays at festivals around the country and has a strong following of devoted fans.

My guests today are two members of the Czech band called Charlie Straight. They are a group from the town of Třinec, and were founded in 2006. But, they don’t play Czech folk music or Czech rock music – they play English Britpop and they even sing in English.

In 2004, commercial broadcaster TV Nova launched the first edition of Cesko hleda superstar (the Czech version of American Idol), which launched the careers of several singers, most notably that of the competition’s winner Aneta Langerová, whose first album Spousta andelů (Many Angels) achieved broad success.

In this edition of Sunday Music Show, we talk to guitarist Roman Procházka, from the famous Czech band Divokej Bill, who says the band is working on a new album and will tour in the UK this year. In the show we also discuss what it’s like to tour in England and why it is important for a band to keep a close relationship with its fans.

After a six-year break, the unconventional and eccentric pop band Buty has released a new album, Duperele, and it seems the wait was well worth it. The band’s eighth studio album found Buty in top form, combining their original, playful and stylistically eclectic music with innovative and witty lyrics. Sunday Music this week is dedicated to Joan DeVee Dixon, pianist, organist and composer from Maryland in the US who performs mainly Czech and American music. Joan frequently tours the Czech Republic and performs at the annual American Spring music festival organized by the International Dvorak Society. She has moreover composed a Czech heritage mass for the Czech expat community in Spillville, parts of which you can hear in today’s show.

In 1977, a mailman, a math analyst and an actor got together to make some rather strange and wonderful music. Jablkoň, as they called the band, started off playing gigs in places around Prague that didn’t insist on specific genres. As you’ll hear in today’s Sunday Music Show, Jablkoň’s music rather defies easy explanation; a brand of distinctive folk blended with jazz, rock and more that’s often called world music.
