The Czech national football team have risen to tenth in FIFA's rankings, while Ostrava wonderboy Michal Papadopulos, looks set to join giants Arsenal, if he can get a Greek passport.

The Czech Republic have taken their best ever tally - three medals - at the European Triathlon Championships in Karlovy Vary. Leading Czech athlete Roman Sebrle has taken part in an unusual event - a complete decathlon not over the regular two days but in just 100 minutes! The Czech Republic's men's volleyball team have something to celebrate after reaching the sport's World League finals in Madrid next month. And in tennis news, Jiri Novak's coach says the Czech no. 1 may retire next year and Martina Narvratilova has made a call for smaller tennis

The top Czech women's tennis player, Denisa Chladkova, will be seeded for the first time in her career when she takes part in the Wimbledon tournament next week. She says, however, that being seeded is no great advantage. In football news, both Banik Ostrava and Prague's Bohemians have signed new managers while Sparta Prague's summer spending spree shows no signs of stopping. The Golden Spike in Ostrava was the most important athletics meeting ever held in this country, attracting many world stars. And two Czech ice hockey players have been celebrating success in the Stanley Cup.

Striker Jan Koller looks fit for Wednesday's Euro 2004 football qualifier against Moldova in Olomouc. Meanwhile, Euro 96er Patrik Berger joins Portsmouth and fellow veteran Karel Poborsky says he will retire at 32 after one more season at Sparta Prague. Former ice hockey megastar Dominik Hasek has been banned from in-line hockey for a year for attacking an opponent. The Czech football team which reached the final of Euro 96 have reunited for an exhibition match in Prague and goalkeeper Petr Cech could fulfil a childhood dream by signing with Spanish giant Barcelona.

Czech tennis number one Jiri Novak has reached the third round of the French Open after an unexpectedly tough encounter with Spain's little-known Marc Lopez. Pavel Nedved, who was suspended for the final, has failed to become the first ever Czech to win the greatest competition in club football, the Champions League. It's official: Sparta are Czech league champions. Despite low interest in the Czech Cup, winners Teplice will be glad of a chance of UEFA Cup action and Czech ice hockey goalie Roman Cechmanek is on the move.

Sparta Prague were due to be presented with the football league title at the weekend, but a legal question means they can't celebrate just yet; the Prague club are not best pleased. In tennis the Czech pair of Novak and Stepanek reached the final of the World Team Cup, only to be beaten by Chile. At least one Czech is going to get his hands on ice hockey's Stanley Cup this season and world champion Martin Koukal has been named skiing's King of the White Tracks.
