Milos Zeman's well timed attack on his successor has proved counterproductive however. The papers all describe the former Prime Minister as a has-been who has failed to come to terms with the fact that his political career is over. It does not take a great deal to see that Prime Minister Spidla is more honest, more hard working and an altogether nicer man, says Mlada Fronta Dnes. Unfortunately that is not enough, the paper adds.

Without question the main story in all of today's dailies is the ruling coalition's success in overturning a presidential veto on a tax bill amendment raising the country's VAT on some goods and services from 5 to 22 percent. The bill amendment was the first step for the government's planned fiscal reforms, and its passing puts the government on steadier ground. PRAVO writes that President Klaus has "lost his first clash with the coalition" and the daily features a photo of a jubilant Finance Minister Bohulsav Sobotka on its cover. One hurdle overcome, all of today's dailies note the government will face another trial this Friday when it faces a no-confidence vote.

The vote of confidence in the government and discussion on its public finance reform plan in the lower house of parliament this week are dominating most papers today. All the dailies speculate on the chances of the opposition Civic Democrats winning a no-vote of confidence and bringing down the three-party coalition government. Internationally, it's Monday's terrorist attack on the UN headquarters in Iraq as well as NATO's new secretary general that make the front pages.

Today Czech daily newspapers report on the resignation of MP Hana Marvanova and analyze its implications. All of the papers also carry extensive photos of Jozo Raz, the lead singer of the Slovak pop band, Elan. The band attracted nearly as many fans to Prague as the Rolling Stones did recently.

Quite a mixed bag of stories on today's front pages. MLADA FRONTA DNES leads with a planned campaign against aggressive drivers. The Transport Ministry is drafting an amendment to the traffic law which - it's hoped - will reduce the horrendous road death statistics in this country. If the bill becomes law, each driver who is caught breeching traffic rules will get a certain number of points depending on the gravity of the offence.

The government session where ministers approved the state budget for next year finished shortly before today's daily newspapers went to print, so there is little information and no analysis. Instead, the papers focus on the government's proposed fiscal reforms which are closely connected with the budget.

The coalition government is under pressure from all sides -can it possibly survive? That is the question which commentators are now addressing daily, depending on which way the wind happens to be blowing. Today Prime Minister Vladimir Spidla is seen as having triumphed in the clash of wills with trade unions, who have agreed to desist from further protest actions despite having received no significant concessions from the government.

No one story dominates Tuesday's Czech newspapers, though the end of Jan Kavan's term as president of the United Nations General Assembly does feature prominently everywhere. Mr Kavan tells that he regards the passing of the UN's first ever resolution on the prevention of armed conflict as a great success.

Photos of trade union members at Saturday's demonstration against the government's public finance reform plan are featured on all the front pages today, with all dailies looking into how much the government is willing to react to their demands. Internationally, it is Sweden's referendum on the adoption of the Euro - 56% voted against the single European currency, and the released photo of the possible murderer of Swedish Foreign Minister Anna Lindh that also make the headlines.

Mrs Lindh's killing has provoked questions about security for politicians not only in Sweden, but throughout Europe. Also making headlines today - the Pope's visit to Slovakia, and a rebellion in the upper house in parliament over the government's public finance reforms.
