Just one day to go before the referendum on the Czech Republic's accession to the European Union, and all of the daily newspapers are understandably filled with reports on the EU. But, interestingly, they do not dominate all of the front pages: the headlines of and do deal with the EU referendum, but and 's first pages focus more on the latest suicide bombing in Jerusalem and the CSA pilots' strike set for Tuesday.

EU related issues dominate the front pages: there are snapshots of former president Vaclav Havel at Tuesday's concert in support of EU accession; reports about the 2 million e-mails - sent out by mistake under the Prime Minister's name - urging Czechs to go to the polls; and an interview about EU membership with President Vaclav Klaus under the heading "It is a pity we couldn't enjoy our sovereignty for a while longer, but it is simply not possible".

All the dailies lead with the court case of the former communist official Karel Hoffman who was sentenced to four years in prison by a Prague court yesterday for his part in crushing the 1968 reform movement in Czechoslovakia by the armies of the Warsaw Pact. LIDOVE NOVINY, MLADA FRONTA DNES and HOSPODARSKE NOVINY are using an almost identical headline: "First person sentenced for August 1968".

All papers today carry a photo of a very happy Polish President Alexander Kwasniewski, celebrating his people's overwhelming "Yes" vote in this week-end's referendum to join the European Union. But EU fever is also taking hold in the Czech Republic. "Four days to go before the referendum" writes LIDOVE NOVINY which will carry special supplements until Thursday looking at various topics dealing with EU membership. The front pages of the Czech dailies today offer a mixed bag of photos and reports. Lidove Noviny takes a religious note on its page one: it has a large photo of Pope John Paul II, who is currently in Croatia on his one hundredth foreign trip. But where Lidove Noviny goes for religion, Pravo follows with pop culture - and a picture of the Czech Republic's current Miss Universe Katerina Smrzova, who came seventh in the Miss Universe Contest held in Panama on Monday.

Most dailies lead with the latest peace initiative in the Middle East - "hope after years of war" says MLADA FRONTA DNES, "Israelis and Palestinians promise each other peace" writes LIDOVE NOVINY. Back home, the domestic news is dominated by government plans to limit parliamentary immunity from prosecution and also to increase inheritance tax.

The record increase in wages makes the front pages of all papers today, followed by strikes in Austria and France that have brought everything to a standstill and the US-Arab summit in Egypt at which US President George Bush got positive responses from Arab leaders to the so-called Road Map to Peace in the Middle East conflict.

Government cutbacks dominate most of Tuesday's front pages, with trade unions in several sectors threatening protests. On its front page, MLADA FRONTA DNES also reports on divisions within the opposition Civic Democrats over next week's referendum on European Union membership.

Monday's papers all lead with different stories. Internationally, the G8 summit in Evian and celebrations in St. Petersburg make the front pages. The G8 summit is in full swing in France, and thousands of anti-globalisation protesters have brought chaos to the streets of Evian and Lausanne in nearby Switzerland on the other side of Lake Geneva. In Russia, it's the three hundredth anniversary of the founding of St. Petersburg that makes the headlines. There's just one story for the papers today: the surprise resignation - now withdrawn - of Jaroslav Tvrdik. His U-turn came too late for the dailies of course, and pictures of a glum-looking Mr Tvrdik are splashed across the front pages. The country's most widely read paper - the tabloid BLESK -- sums it all up with the words "Tvrdik Packs His Bags!" Except now he's unpacking them.
