All today's newspapers report on the split of the Coalition of Christian Democrats and the Freedom Union. The two parties, which have just formed a new government with the Social Democrats, said they will go into the senate elections in the autumn separately. The Coalition no longer exists, Pravo quotes a Freedom Union representative. However, the parties WILL stay side by side in the government.

All of today's front pages show president Havel leaning onto his wife Dagmar as he descends from his plane and into a waiting ambulance ready to take him to Prague's military hospital. The president's early return from a state visit to France has once again raised the question of his poor health and the taxing duties of a head of state.

All of today's papers feature the plight of several villages in Moravia that have suffered extensive damage from this week's floods that have swept across the region - many papers carry the same photo of a depressed family in the Blansko region discarding their flood-damaged furniture. On a political note, the election of the Communist MP Vojtech Filip to one of the six posts of lower house deputy-chairmen also makes the headlines on the front pages of all the dailies. And the final results of the 2001 national census also feature.

All today's papers feature photos of the new cabinet members who were sworn into office yesterday at Prague Castle. The main dailies quote President Vaclav Havel as saying he believes the government will prove a hard-working team which will remain in office for the whole four-year term and lead the Czech Republic into the European Union.

The assassination attempt against French President Jacques Chirac during France's Bastille Day parade on Sunday dominates Monday's front pages. The papers carry detailed reports of the incident and Lidove noviny notes how much it resembles the assassination attempt against the former President Charles de Gaulle as described in Frederich Forsyth's book "The Day of the Jackal".

Perhaps few people will be surprised to learn that politics make all the headlines of all of today's Czech dailies: Thursday saw the election of a new speaker of parliament in the Czech Republic: "Zaoralek to lead new parliament, Zaoralek beats Klaus 101 - 74, Klaus lasts only one round" is how some of the dailies describe the two-round battle for the chairmanship between Social Democrat Lubomir Zoaralek and former speaker Vaclav Klaus that took place Thursday. The two round bid was seen as the first test of solidarity for the new coalition government between the Social Democrats, the Christian Democrats, and the Freedom Union-DEU, and, although Mr Zaoralek's bid was ultimately a success, LIDOVE NOVINY points out that the first round misstep indicates the new coalition might not function as smoothly as most members would like.

Most Czech papers today lead with the story about Civic Democrat leader Vaclav Klaus unexpectedly standing for chairman of the lower house of parliament. Mr Klaus is quoted as saying he aims to test the slim majority of the government coalition in the lower house. The papers agree and hypothesise on the possible developments after today's vote.

All Czech daily newspapers today report from the official signing of an agreement between the Social Democrats, the Christian Democrats and the Freedom Union to form a new coalition government. MLADA FRONTA DNES carries a facsimile of signatures of two representatives of each party under the agreement. Another common issue is the first meeting of the newly elected Lower House of Parliament on Tuesday.

The face of the Czech Republic's Prime Minister designate, the Social Democrat leader Vladimir Spidla looks out from all of today's front pages. "The birth of a new Czech government" reads the lead headline in Lidove Noviny. " Sweden : Spidla's role model" says Mlada Fronta Dnes, referring to the future Prime Minister's ambition to build a Scandinavian-style welfare state.

The Japanese Emperor Akihito and his wife Michiko make it to the front pages of just about all today's Czech papers, with pictures from their tour of the sites of old Prague. But on the front pages the smiles of the imperial pair contrast dramatically with the grim expression of Hana Marvanova, last week's loser on the Czech political scene.
