Unsurprisingly perhaps, all of Tuesday's dailies again devote a lot of attention to the success of the far-right Jean Marie Le Pen in the first round of France's presidential election; "the French have shocked both themselves and Europe" reads the headline on page one of Mlada fronta Dnes.

All Czech daily newspapers today feature photographs of popular Czech actor Vlastimil Brodsky who died on Saturday at the age of 81. The sad news for the Czech theatre scene shares front page space with the French presidential elections, where in the first round, where, to the shock of many, the ultra-right-wing nationalist Jean-Marie Le Pen came in second.

All of Friday's front pages cover the accident in Milan in which a single-seater plane crashed into a skyscraper, killing the pilot and three people in the building. Lidove noviny reports that Sudeten Germans - expelled from Czechoslovakia after World War II under the Benes decrees - have, at a debate in Vienna entitled "From Benes to Saron", compared their experience in the past to what the Palestinians are currently going through.

The faces of Prime Minister Milos Zeman and Russian President Vladimir Putin grace all the front pages today - Mr Putin's support for the Czech Republic in the dispute over the post-war Benes decrees has clearly gone down well. Mlada fronta Dnes also features a young Jewish man, complete with skullcap and Star of David flag draped over his shoulders, attending a ceremony in Prague to commemorate the anniversary of the foundation of Israel.

The resignation of the Dutch government in connection with the Srebrenica massacre, the general strike against Silvio Berlusconi's government in Italy and continuing efforts to broker a cease-fire in the Middle East - those are the lead international topics on today's front pages.

It's the Middle East which still dominates the front pages of the Czech dailies today - Lidove noviny shows a still from the latest Osama bin Laden video, which also purports to contain the last will and testament of one of the September 11th hijackers. Mlada fronta Dnes, meanwhile, features a picture of one of the survivors of Monday's plane crash in South Korea, being helped away from the wreckage of the Boeing 767. "He was lucky" reads the caption, in a master of understatement.

After a fairly quiet weekend on the domestic scene, it is the Middle East crisis and the turbulent events in Venezuela which fill Monday's front pages. The papers carry details of US Secretary of State Colin Powell's attempt to broker a cease-fire after 18 months of Israeli-Palestinian violence. "Futile talks" and "Colin Powell fails to bring about a break- through" read the headlines in Pravo and Mlada fronta Dnes.

All of today's papers cover Guenter Verheugen's visit to Prague - two of the dailies carry Mr Verheugen's photo on the front page, although Mlada fronta Dnes and Hospodarske noviny opt either for Colin Powell on his visit to Israel or Zdenek Tuma, the governor of the Czech National Bank, looking troubled by the strengthening crown.

Not surprisingly, the terrible events in the Middle East receive a lot of attention in Thursday's newspapers. Lidove noviny carries a front-page opinion piece entitled "Czechs and Israelis share a common experience". Comparing Czechoslovakia after World War II with the foundation of Israel, commentator Zbynek Petracek writes that the both countries fear the return of expellees.

The funeral of Britain's Queen Mother receives front-page coverage in most dailies today; Pravo and Lidove noviny feature pictures of the Queen attending Tuesday's service in Westminster Abbey, while Mlada fronta Dnes leads with pictures of the royal coffin on its final journey. The sober business daily Hospodarske noviny is the only paper to ignore the Queen Mother's funeral, opting instead for news that MPs have finally approved plans for the country's new state administration.
