Three adventure-loving young Czechs are gearing up for the August Rickshaw Run, a 3,500 km adrenalin ride across India. Three people packed in a rickshaw with no set route, no back-up, and no way of knowing if they are going to make it to the finishing line. Close to 100 teams from around the world flock to India for the adventure every year and often come back for more. I asked Jakub Janča, one of the three Czechs involved, how it all came about.

Prague Baseball Week is underway in the Czech capital offering games every day; baseball has grown increasingly popular in the Czech Republic over the last twenty years with eight teams competing in top flight Extraliga. I took the opportunity to talk to Canadian-born Mike Griffin, a former college baseball player who coaches the Czech national team.

Last week the Dvůr Králové Zoo announced the birth of two black rhinos – the latest success in its rhino breeding programme. The zoo which has devoted close to four decades trying to save the breed from extinction cooperates with a sanctuary in Tanzania where it returns rhinos to their natural habitat. I spoke about the project with Jan Stejskal, in situ project coordinator at Dvůr Králové Zoo, and first asked how exceptional it was to have two rhino calves born in captivity within the space of five days.

The Dancing House Gallery in Prague has just opened an exhibition called Retro of the 70s and 80s, depicting the way of life of the common people and the communist elite in the last two decades of communism. The exhibition is extremely realistic – giving visitors a powerful throwback as they walk into the typical 70’s living room, shop or holiday scene. I went along and was given a tour by one of the organizers, Nikola Lörinczová.

Bea Johnson is a zero waste guru and an author of a best-selling book called Zero Waste Home. She proudly carries a bottle around with her which contains all the waste she and her three member family have created over the last year. It’s about the size of a marmalade jar. And Bea was one of the stars at the Zero Waste conference, hosted by the non-profit organisation Bezobalu, which took place in Prague this week. I met her prior to the conference I asked her if she could outline the main ideas behind the philosophy:

Last Saturday Trabant fans from around the country descended on Prague’s Motol district, in the western suburbs of the city, for the opening of the one-and-only Trabant Museum in the Czech Republic. The small two-cylinder vehicle born in communist East-Germany as an affordable car for the masses was neither affordable, nor easily accessible, but somehow or other the smoke-belching, sluggish Trabi has won many people’s hearts and still has fan clubs around the world.

Prague Zoo is celebrating the unexpected appearance of a baby gorilla, born to 40-year-old female Shinda who for long years was unable to have young. Overnight Shinda and her baby have gained celebrity status drawing hundreds of visitors to the Gorilla Pavilion. I went along to see the latest addition to the gorilla troupe and asked curator Vit Lukáš how it all came about.

Six years ago Zuzana Tomášková made a bold decision to change her life. As a nurse and single mum she decided to move to Saudi Arabia in search of a better job and new experiences. Today, the country is her second home, she has made many friends in a multi-cultural environment and has learnt to accept the restrictions governing a woman’s life in Saudi Arabia. We talked about her life on one of her trips back home and I began by asking how hard it had been to leave family and friends and start a new life in a foreign country.

The migrant crisis is making Czechs increasingly wary of foreigners. According to a recent poll conducted by the STEM agency, the number of people who think an ethnic group or minority should have the right to live in the Czech Republic according to its own traditions has dropped by almost a half to 25 percent in the past two years. Only 25 percent of respondents now say requests for Czech citizenship should be granted without regard to nationality or ethnicity.
