The Czech government recently launched its official campaign ahead of next month's EU referendum. TV viewers have been treated to a series of 30-second ads, featuring EU citizens (played by actors) explaining how membership has helped their country. At the same time billboards have gone up across the country, featuring more EU citizens extolling the virtues of membership. The ad campaign is slick and professional, but will it work? Jitka Paterson Sigmund was born in Olomouc in north Moravia, where her family owned a pump manufacturers called Sigmund Pumpy; in fact that's where the name of the local football team, Sigma Olomouc, came from. After the war Mrs Paterson Sigmund left Czechoslovakia for a year or two and never returned. She is now a leading member of the British Czech and Slovak Association. When I spoke to her at her north London home she described the factory owned by her family.

Lady Luisa Abrahams is a truly remarkable woman. Born Luisa Raudnitzerova in 1910 she grew up in the Prague district of Bubenec, where her father ran a hospital. A golf champion in pre-war Czechoslovakia, Lady Luisa stayed in the UK, where she had gone to play a tournament, when war broke out and has been there to this day. My guest today is Benjamin Kuras, who himself worked at Radio Prague for a couple of months in mid-1968. Not long afterwards Mr Kuras - who is now a well-known author, playwright and conservative political commentator - left Czechoslovakia for the United Kingdom, where he lives to this day.
