Blanka Milfaitová’s famous marmalade mini-manufacture is a dream come true. Her jams, produced in a small village in the Šumava mountains have won her the title of the World’s Best Artisan Marmalade Maker, the 2013 gold medal at the World Marmalade Awards and the Double Gold Star at the Great Taste Awards. Right now Blanka is on a European Marmalade Expedition making marmalade from local produce in 35 countries around Europe.

A recent expansion of the Dutch company Ahold in the Czech Republic reflects the country’s changing retail market. Ahold, which bought 50 stores from the loss-making Austrian firm Spar, is now set to become market leader, a new situation for the fragmented Czech market. But analysts say more changes are in the pipeline, including customers’ move away from supermarkets to smaller speciality stores.

Four central European countries have made a renewed effort to secure imports of natural gas from the United States. Amidst the ongoing Crimea crisis, the Visegrad Group states have appealed to US lawmakers to ease natural gas exports to the region as a way of diminishing its dependence on Russian gas.

This week marks 20 years since the launch of TV Nova, the first Czech commercial television channel. Prague is one of Europe’s top tourist destinations, with an annual five million visitors. For some of them, however, the combination of the city’s night life and cheap alcohol is a far bigger attraction than its historic heritage. In parts of the city centre, severe problems with noisy and drunk tourists have prompted the authorities to consider imposing a 10 PM closing time deadline on some of the notorious watering holes, a move which has earned them accusations of reviving communist-era rules.

The Czech Republic’s biggest national park has become a battleground for those fighting over its future development. Academics and green groups this week delivered what they hope will be a decisive rebuttal to what they see as moves to open up the park to developers and loggers.

The Czech passenger rail market is one that appears on the verge of great upheaval even though competition is still very much the exception rather than the rule. Better known as a coach company on its home market in Britain, National Express, has just set up a Czech subsidiary and sees itself as one of several rail operators that could eventually be competing for big city and small town passenger services.
