This week Warsaw held commemorative events to mark the 65th anniversary of the uprising against the Nazi's in the city's Jewish Ghetto. Politicians from Poland and Israel, as well as Germany, the United States and France were there for the ceremonies but also Holocaust survivors from many countries and many young people, mostly from Israel and the United States.

A sketch depicting the Last Supper of Christ as a homo-erotic orgy has been removed from Vienna's Cathedral Museum. It was part of an exhibition exploring religion in the work of one of Austria's greatest living artists - Alfred Hrdlicka. Protests and threats from outraged believers led to the work's removal. To find out what all the fuss was about Kerry Skyring went to the Cathedral Museum and spoke to its director Bernhard Böhler. He said me the Vienna Catholic diocese has long had an interest in art.

There were clashes over abortion in the European parliament this week. The source of the conflict was a report calling for abortion to be decriminalised in all of Europe. A majority of Parliamentarians supported the recommendation - which is not binding - but others, from countries such as Italy and Poland where abotition is restricted, argued that freedom of choice should not prevail over the rights of the unborn. The debate in the parliament in Strasbourg coincides with another in the Czech Republic and a court ruling on abortion earlier this

Police in the Czech region of North Bohemia have detained a man on suspicion of desecrating the graves of hundreds of Holocaust victims at the site of the former Nazi concentration camp of Terezín last week. The man is accused of stealing over 300 bronze name plaques from the graves. If found guilty he could face up to eight years in prison. Radio Prague's Ruth Frankova reports on why this is a particularly sensitive crime.

Zmago Jeraj is one of the most important Slovenian painters and photographers of the second half of the 20th century. His work spans fifty years of unique and versatile works which shape art in Slovenia to this day. He combined techniques and also used them separately. Radio Slovenia International's Ivana Pristavec reports on how Slovenia is honouring one of its best known artists.

The Olympic torch is having a troubled world tour with protests growing louder over China's human rights record in Tibet. There's no serious talk of an Olympic games boycott but a number of European leaders are staying away from the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony - including the Czech and Polish presidents. And as Slawek Szefs reports from Warsaw, there's support among many Poles for the Tibetan cause.

Slovakia has moved closer to joining the European common currency, the euro. Bratislava has officially asked the European Central Bank and European Commission to assess whether it is ready to adopt the new currency in January of next year.

This week saw the launch of a new campaign aimed at raising awareness of right-wing extremism and neo-Nazism in the Czech Republic. The scheme is organised by the Czech NGO People in Need along with other groups. Their campaign is titled - "Who wants a Neo Nazi?"

Croatia is on the verge of joining the European Union and NATO. If all goes well it will become the 28th member of the EU in 2010 and a member of NATO as early as next year. It will join Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Hungary and the Czech Republic among former communist states to have made this journey. But according to Slavenka Drakulic many Croatians are unaware of the consequences and unwilling to give up their hard won sovereignty.
